To be alive at all involves some risk.

Ez gives it the thumbs up at Seven Mile Beach. There was a quote in the Engels biography that Ezra and I enjoyed very much. It concerned Engels' only vist to the Unioted States (he liked it), and more particularly, New York. For him, the big apple was a town worthy to be inhabited by the most vile-looking crowd in the world, they all look like discharged croupiers from Monte Carlo. "[ D ] ischarged croupiers from Monte Carlo "? Thumbs up!

Men marched asleep.

Sunrise over the Derwent is always worth a glance. May 2010. I have a headache. As ever though, things could be worse. Here's Wilfred Owen. Dulce Et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori , Wilfred Owen Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs, And towards our distant rest began to trudge. Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots, But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame, all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots Of gas-shells dropping softly behind. Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! — An ecstasy of fumbling Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time, But someone still was yelling out and stumbling And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime.— Dim through the misty panes and thick green light, As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. In all my dreams before my helpless sight He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace Behind t

The best revenge is to be unlike him who performed the injury.

Henry and Jen[ry] look for starfish in Bellerive. They thought they found one, but it had only ever appeared in reality television, thus only qualified as a “fish”.

Writers are a little below clowns and a little above trained seals.

The Faculty of Health Science, Hobart. October 2010. Busy little bee today. I'll have bee very quick: I finished The Frock-Coated Communist: The Revolutionary Life of Friedrich Engels by Tristram Hunt. It was wonderful.

No man should ever lose sleep over public affairs.

Ezra can manage to lurk just about anywhere you drop him. Here is is lurking in Bellerive. With a plane. And some seats. The end.

To forget one's purpose is the commonest form of stupidity.

Keeping and eye on things. Clifton Beach, September 2010. Theme Thursday , and due to my being enormously busy of late I'm gonna mix things up and throw the challenge out to YOU dear reader! Three words, and YOU have to use them in a coherent sentence. I'm the judge, and winner gets the kudos. Your words? Aquiline Bacchanalian Vulpine Go on, whatcha waiting for? Just don't twist yourself in a KNOT doing it...

Innocence is like a dumb leper who has lost his bell, wandering the world, meaning no harm.

Henry has no problem walking above the treetops. Jumping , however, is another matter.

Our life is what our thoughts make it.

Everybody goin' surfin', surfin' C.L.I.F.T.O.N. B.E.A.C.H. Clifton Beach, September 2010. If it stops raining in the next week, we might make our way to the beach again.

He will have true glory who despises it.

You're in the snow, feeling pretty cold and you're low to the ground. What could be finer than a cuddle?

Ads that I like: # 119

Good clean fun, for good clean people. What could be finer? I need to know how this explains Shane McGowan though...

In a state where corruption abounds, laws must be very numerous.

Looking down the cantilever. Tahune Airwalk, September, 2010. For those not in the know, a cantilever is a beam supported on only one end. The beam carries the load to the support where it is resisted by moment and shear stress. Cantilever construction allows for overhanging structures without external bracing. If you've ever been on the three metre diving board, you will know what a mean. There's a bit of spring under foot and it sways in the wind. The photo below was taken 48 metres above the ground. The cantilever afford you an impressive view of the Picton and Huon Rivers, as well as the surrounding forest and mountains. Henry and Ezra loved the sensation. However, Jen was looking a little green after Ezra's attempt to get it pumping... The view from the cantilever, as the river forks in two. Tahune Airwalk, September, 2010.

He that leaveth nothing to chance will do few things ill, but he will do very few things.

At least when I take a photograph of the back of Henry’s head, he is not pulling a silly face. The threat of the wind changing appears to have no effect on his behaviour in this regard.

A work of art that contains theories is like an object on which the price tag has been left.

Views from the Airwalk 1 (no spitting). Tahune Forest Reserve, September 2010. Have you every hugged a tree? If you do, remember to use protection in case of splinters! I've never been much of a 'tree hugger'. I'm more a 'tree patter on the back'. Trees are okay, but coffee tables leave less of a mess... Views from the Airwalk 2. Tahune Forest Reserve, September 2010.

A man may dwell so long upon a thought that it may take him prisoner.

The Earth seems a very large place at the best of times, but how must it look to a two year old?

When the curtain falls, the best thing an actor can do is to go away.

Life goes on. Tahune AirWalk. September 2010. Sunday Top Five! An interesting one today that I've extrapolated upon: My Top Five Tracks By Aussie Rock Legends Cold Chisel ! First, some context... I’ll admit that for a very long time Cold Chisel have existed on the periphery of my consciousness. Being from Burnie, Tasmania, you can’t help but recognise all the hits. Undeniably, I’d always quietly liked the tracks, but found the boozing image and yob fan base a little alienating. Thus, I kept my distance and stuck to more exotic (if you can call Gram Parsons and the whole West Coast Country Rock experience ‘exotic’) sounds. Thus, my real discovery of the Chisel is something of a surprise. Originating in Adelaide, Australia, they one of the most acclaimed Australian rock bands of all time, with a string of hits throughout the 1970s and 1980s and huge domestic sales, although for some reason they never could crack that overseas market in the way that contemporaries like Midnight Oil or
