I smiled at one of the guards. He did not smile back. There was nothing funny about national security, nothing at all.

This his pretend angry face. He's pretty transparent when he's faking it. When he's seriously angry, he looks exactly like his mother. Honestly, he's inherited her filthy look...

A leader or a man of action in a crisis almost always acts subconsciously and then thinks of the reasons for his action.

This photo was taken some time ago, and tellingly, it reveals that young Henry's cursive script at age 2 already surpasses my own. Well done Henry!

In all things of nature there is something of the marvellous.

Teamwork . It is a beautiful thing in action.

For the purposes of poetry a convincing impossibility is preferable to an unconvincing possibility.

Here is Henry a few weeks back jiving to the strains of the Bee Gee's Night Fever . If Henry had a beard, he'd easily pass for Barry Gibb . I expect that this will change when he hits puberty, and can no longer hit those high notes...

Poetry demands a man with a special gift for it, or else one with a touch of madness in him.

Here is a blast from the [recent] past: Ezra tickling the ivories [ooh err missus]. I have been trying to encourage a taste for Chopin, but he is veering dangerously into honkeytonk territory. If he stays on this course, he's gonna end up playing in some flea-bitten house of ill repute somewhere in East Baton Rouge.

It is of the nature of desire not to be satisfied, and most men live only for the gratification of it.

Last time I posted one from this series, I copped some flak for comparing Henry to Audrey Hepburn, the implication being that he will resent it. I've taken that on board, so this time I will say that Henry reminds me of Audrey Tautou .

What is defeat? Nothing but education. Nothing but the first step to something better.

Here you can see Dear Little Henry and Dear Little Ezra separated by the infamous Berlin Wall . You might be surprised to find that the Berlin Wall had a section built from wooded lattice, and indeed that Henry and Ezra were around to see it. You can tell that the photo is an authentic old one in the way that it is in black and white. Obviously, it was taken from the perspective of the east, where everything was painted grey, and colour photographs were expressly forbidden.

Not to be loved is a misfortune, but it is an insult to be loved no longer.

Ez has very much taken to the little cars down at the Play Group. Indeed, he's already started trying to impress the chicks with the subtle use of a languid elbow draped out of the window and the kind of disinterested gaze normally associated with a young Mel Gibson. Oh, and no anti-semetic rants, thankfully.

Law is born from despair of human nature.

" EZRA! Get off the phone already! " Honestly, all of these phone calls to supermodels is going to send me broke...

To be as good as our fathers we must be better, imitation is not discipleship.

One of the most sincere wishes that I have of my two lads is that in every way they turn out better than me .

We reason deeply, when we forcibly feel.

Equal parts Papunya Tula and Jackson Pollock, my little Hank is becoming quite the artist. Here he is endeavouring to convey the frighteningly original notion of man's inhumanity to man through a confronting montage of a whale being molested by a vole. Shocking stuff.

Yes, man is mortal, but that would be only half the trouble. The worst of it is that he's sometimes unexpectedly mortal - there's the trick!

As I have already said, these men are New Man . Guaranteed 175% better than Old Man , or your money back!

There is no such thing as conversation. It is an illusion. There are intersecting monologues, that is all.

He's worn out. So am I. I hope that all have a good night's sleep.

If you ever injected truth into politics you have no politics.

This is Henry's angry face. I am reasonably certain that is uncannily like the face I pulled last night after spending an hour slaving away over a hot stove cooking dinner after spending eight hours slaving away over a hot computer only to have my oldest child turn his nose up and refuse to eat one single thing on his plate, telling me that it was "yukky". I will concede that the rissoles were dry, and the roast veg a little overdone, but it all tasted okay. How could he be so certain when he didn't taste it anyway?!?

Moral indignation is jealousy with a halo.

How about that drool? It makes kissing all the more exciting! I forgot to mention that on Fathers Day, we all went boat spotting down on the harbour estuary, promenaded along the waterfront, and then feasted on squid, prawns, chips and the like for an early lunch. Whilst doing so, I spotted a fellow with a ruddy great video camera - of the professional kind - filming us. It turns out he was filming some 'colour' for Al Jazeera's English language TV station. He liked the look of Henry harassing seagulls so much, the little bloke had to do it over and over again until the Arabic news network agent was satisfied with the results. So, if you're a fan of Al Jazeera, keep and eye out for any stories on Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, or small westerners who disturb sea birds. If you spot us, let me know!

Ted, have you ever been face down in the mud, and been kicked in the head with an iron boot?

I swear that when Henry knows that he's in trouble, and you're set to give him a right royal bollocking - a father's privilege - his eyes grow larger. I call it the animé effect. I'm just glad I had boys, I'm certain that the animé effect for girls involves parasols, frilly knickers and lots of bending over...

Liberty is not merely a privilege to be conferred; it is a habit to be acquired.

"You talkin' to me?" "You talkin' to me?" " You talkin' to me? " "Then who the hell else are you talkin' to?" "You talkin' to me?" "Well I'm the only one here. Who the fuck do you think you're talking to?"

There's plain few problems can't be solved with a little sweat and hard work.

Henry : "Are you a bounty hunter?" Bounty Hunter : "A man has got to earn a livin'" Henry : "Dyin' ain't much of a living boy."

All the great speakers were bad speakers at first.

Here is an angry little bloke trying to get into the storage room at the Geilston Bay Community Centre. Now, yes I am a member of the Board, but I am unsure as to whether that grants access for all of my family to the treasure trove within. A stickler for process, I've had to yellow card Ez for his transgression, and put him on notice...

Well, all I know is what I read in the papers.

" Blood oranges, you say...?" Hmmmm...
