So long as the mother, Ignorance, lives; it is not safe for Science, the offspring, to divulge the hidden causes of things.

This used to be an orphanage. Poor orphans! St Johns Park, New Town. March 2011. The King's Orphan School , later, the Queen's Orphan School , was built in 1833 to provide for people who weren’t quite orphans; that is, the children of convict women, orphans those whose parent were unable to support them and abandoned children. What on Earth is going on here?

The secret to happiness is to face the fact that the world is horrible.

Carruthers at dawn. St Johns Park, New Town. August 2010. Here is the building where I now work. A slightly different architectural style than the previous one . The best thing about working in this building is in the fact that you don't have to look at this building. Last Friday a burst water main meant that we lost all water coming into the building. Not too serious for a bunch of pen-pushing keyboard-stroking bureaucrats on the top floor, but less pleasant for the renal ward downstairs...

He will have true glory who despises it.

On the way to the bus stop one foggy morning. Geilston Bay, June 2010. Walking to walk in the fog is a pleasure. Well, it's more of a pleasure than walking to work in the poring rain...
