Evolution (in reverse) of a birthday cake

Henry opted for a dinosaur this year. Tricky, but not impossible. I eschewed the T-Rex. Note the colourful cakes. Fossilised remains?

He who has overcome his fears will truly be free.

Last year Elmo made a surprise appearance at Henry's birthday party, then we cut him up and ate him. Yesterday, the party was stormed by a crocodile ! Brave soul that he is, Henry tackled the wee beastie and subdued the bugger, before carving him up and offering his delicious - and strangely banana-flavoured - flesh to all and sundry. Video at twelve!

True Story

I doubted her bold claims to being action oriented (given her [ahem] sturdy figure), but by golly, you should have seen her dive for that last piece of cake!

Action stations!

Despite everything, I've had a good day today thus far. I'm ticking boxes left, right and centre. Still no cake though...

OUTRAGE!

The furore continues. It is moving so quickly that it is passing me by!

Bugger the reform process, this has rocked the health and human services/community sector to its very core...

Let them eat cake!

Sometimes when I am at work, I swear that I am stuck on Groundhog Day ...

It's chocolate cake Jim, but not as we know it...

You may have seen some of these 'quick cakes' floating around these here Internets lately. I had, and was rather sceptical. Throwing caution to the wind, and with an narky toddler and wife to keep happy, I wanted to see if I could make a chocolate cake in under ten minutes. Cherry picking from three of four recipes, I settled on the following combo: INGREDIENTS 8 Tablespoons self raising flour 8 Tablespoons sugar 5 Tablespoons cocoa 1 Egg 6 Tablespoons milk 5 Tablespoons oil 1 Microwave-proof container METHOD Mix the dry ingredients. Add the egg. Pour in milk and oil, and mix well. Put in microwave for six minutes on maximum. Turn out on cooling tray. EAT! And do you know what? It actually worked. We had a nice, firm and moist cake ready to go. I reckon that it would work pretty well with a ganache with a bit of cream on the side. I didn't get a photo, because this mob demolished it too quickly for me.

Qu'ils mangent de la brioche

Personally, I don't think that the lady was likely to have uttered the above phrase, but the distance between her lifestyle and that of the wretched masses did not win her any sympathy. Pay heed, residents of the Silo Apartments ! The cake featured above is a little strawberry tea cake that Henry and I managed to cook this afternoon. I knocked off early today as Jen had an obstetrician appointment today. Well... at least Jen thinks that it was an obstetrician that she saw, they don't really introduce themselves, part of an obnoxiously superior [ahem] socially dysfunctional interesting manner whereby the patient appears a mere obstacle to a big fat paycheck a secondary concern. But enough doctor baiting! I was talking cake, and today in order to satisfy the eager el duce I opened up the cupboard, grabbed the flour and had a think about what we could whip up. Recipes? Pfft! Amateur hour. Working off an apple tea cake variation that I know well, we got some strawberries, qua...
