Not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good.

Fish from Venice. Geilston Bay, September 2016. No, you can't do that. You can't do that with that shirt on. Not with those shoes you can't. Not with that look on your face. Not with that attitude. Not with your frame of reference. Not from you. Not by the likes of you. No, you can't do that.

Only the madman is absolutely sure.

The egg has been given the chop. Geilston Bay, September 2016. The egg done wrong. The egg caught red handed. Justice.

Pain and pleasure, like light and darkness, succeed each other.

Henry at work. Geilston Bay. September 2013. The Winter Queen , Boris Akunin: A story of murder, suicide, deception and disguise that hurtles through pre-revolutionary Tsarist Russia. Crafted with care, Akunin weaves some beautiful expression and a series of exotic historical settings - primarily Moscow, Saint Petersburg and a quick jaunt to the seedier side of London in the mid-1870s - together with a wonderful series of well developed characters that really does feel like Tolstoy tackling a murder mystery. I loved it. A .

In solitude the mind gains strength and learns to lean upon itself.

"I'm Stick Man, I'm Stick Man, I'M STICK MAN, that's me!"

Humans live through their myths and only endure their realities.

There's a lot to be said for having a small manageable dream.

This is not really what I was thinking when I asked for a swimsuit model for Christmas...

You can't fake creativity, competence, or sexual arousal.

Moshi Monsters. The kitchen bench, Geilston Bay. August 2013. The Housekeeper and the Professor , Yōko Ogawa: A Japanese novel that intersperses memory with pure mathmatics. I really liked it. B+ . World War Z , Max Brooks: The retelling of the Zombie War as written by the son of Mel Brooks. It was better than the movie sounds. C+ . Out Stealing Horses , Per Petterson: A bittersweet Norweigen bit of nostalgia. The central narrator, at the end of his life, removes himself out to the country and dwells on his memories. It's a restrained but powerful book. I loved it. A+ .

If I see an ending, I can work backward.

Breakfast! The kitchen bench, Geilston Bay. August 2103. The Things They Carried , Tim O'Brien: a loose collection of vignettes centreing on a platoon of American soldiers in the Vietnam War. Some people really do hate this book, others love it. Count me with the latter. Harrowing. A . A Modest Proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People From Being a Burthen to Their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Publick , Jonathan Swift: Political satire at its best. There is a reason that this is considered part of the canon. A .

We forget because we must and not because we will.

My Henry, what big EYES you have!

I'm nobody, who are you?

Blow Henry blow!

It's my rule never to lose my temper till it would be detrimental to keep it.

Are you free Mr Humphries?

There is no salvation in becoming adapted to a world which is crazy.

I know that it is something to do with computers...

He is rich or poor according to what he is, not according to what he has.

He has Freda Payne's Band of Gold stuck in his head. For some reason.

An election is coming. Universal peace is declared, and the foxes have a sincere interest in prolonging the lives of the poultry.

Ezra's pre-shorn impression of the wild man of Borneo.

Reality continues to ruin my life.

BEFORE . AFTER .

The future is made of the same stuff as the present.

BEFORE . AFTER .

I have had a perfectly wonderful evening, but this wasn't it.

The usual suspects. BONUS PIC! Here comes the hot-steppers!

Writing is like prostitution. First you do it for love, and then for a few close friends, and then for money.

Making naked eggs. The kitchen, Geilston Bay. June 2013. The Casualty , Heinrich Böll: A fantastically bleak collection of short stories written just after the Second World War. Böll does a great job exploring life in Germany during and after a rather dark period. B+ . The Successor , Ismail Kadaré: Perhaps the dullest Albanian book I've ever read. Surprising really, given the potential of the subject matter. D . Making eggs naked. The kitchen, Geilston Bay. June 2013.

Great bodies of people are never responsible for what they do.
