People who don't take risks generally make about two big mistakes a year. People who do take risks generally make about two big mistakes a year.

I CANNAE GIVE HER ANY MORE CAPTAIN!

I'm nobody, who are you?

Blow Henry blow!

I wrote a poem

Experiment on the way home #1. Sandy Bay Road, Sandy Bay. July 2013. Here is a poem that I wrote in two minutes about another poem that I wrote in one minute. I consider it... ...an experiment. I Wrote A Poem , Kris McCracken I wrote a poem once. It was a good poem. A poem like no other poem you have never heard. The poem - that I wrote - a draft a play a practice exercise game. It was a good poem. But I threw it away. Experiment on the way home #2. Sandy Bay Road, Sandy Bay. July 2013.

Clevinger was dead. That was the basic flaw in his philosophy.

Walking home from work. St Davids Park, Hobart. June 2013. Wordless Wednesday. 10 Murray Street on acid. St Davids Park, Hobart. June 2013.

It is better to know nothing than to know what ain't so.

Men of science!

Writing is like prostitution. First you do it for love, and then for a few close friends, and then for money.

Making naked eggs. The kitchen, Geilston Bay. June 2013. The Casualty , Heinrich Böll: A fantastically bleak collection of short stories written just after the Second World War. Böll does a great job exploring life in Germany during and after a rather dark period. B+ . The Successor , Ismail Kadaré: Perhaps the dullest Albanian book I've ever read. Surprising really, given the potential of the subject matter. D . Making eggs naked. The kitchen, Geilston Bay. June 2013.

An original idea. That can't be too hard. The library must be full of them.

Mucking about in a pandani grove. Lake Dobson, Mount Field National Park. April 2013. And Then There Were None , Agatha Christie: I wonder why they changed the name? Red herrings galore, this one has a very elaborate set-up. B . Nowhere Man , Aleksandar Hemon: Displacement is never much fun. This novel explores that. I liked it. B .

It is not necessary to understand things in order to argue about them.

Ezra is just about to split his very first neutron!

The need to be right is the sign of a vulgar mind.

Ezra has somehow managed to construct an experimental death ray that transforms sonic energy into a deadly weapon. It's been quite a disappointment.

Intuitive assumptions about behaviour is only the starting point of systematic analysis, for alone they do not yield many interesting implications.

Behold... SCIENCE . The kitchen, Geilston Bay. January 2012. Theme Thursday again and I am treating you to a unique VIEW of science in action ! In my VIEW Henry just hadn’t been pulling his weight in 2011 bread-wise. so Satan Claws and I had a little pow-wow and decided that the liberating force of science could be the secret to unlocking his money-earning potential. The big man in red did his part and on Christmas morn, Henry (as per yesterday evening’s post) found himself the lucky owner of this science kit ! Science , you see, is where it is at in 2012. You might think that it is little more than a systematic endeavour that builds and organises knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the corporeal universe. Well, that would depend on your VIEW. In 2012, science is big bucks. Science means shed weight™ , get fitter© , run faster® , stay harder™ and look younger® . Science is a business. A very profitable business. The experiment that Henry and I a...

War is the unfolding of miscalculations.

Time. Home, Geilston Bay. July 2011. 1. Who are you? I am me. 2. What is your biggest goal for this year? To make it through unscathed. 3. Where do you want to be in 5 years? Somewhere nice. 4. What stage of life are you in right now? I am – according to the BBC – currently in the most expensive year of life. Somebody forgot to tell me! 5. Are you more child-like or childish? Childish. 6. What is the last thing you said out loud? “It will probably end up snowing all October.” 7. What song comes closest to how you feel about your life right now? Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey. 8. Does your life tend to get better or worse or does it just stay the same? At present we are kind of treading water. 9. Does time really heal all wounds? No, I don’t think that it does. 10. How do you handle a rainy day? Badly. 11. Do you tend to be aware of what is going on around you? Acutely so. 12. What is the trues...

the three popes / proclaim / the revolution / against teenage television

Experiments at night (with pants) # 1. Constitution Dock, Hobart. June 2011. A: “This is a sorry sight.” B: “A foolish thought, to say a sorry sight.” A: “There's one did laugh in 's sleep, and one cried, ‘Murther!’ That they did wake each other. I stood and heard them; But they did say their prayers, and address'd them Again to sleep.” Now we break for a poem... Tonight , Elfriede Jelinek tonight my sparrows let go the snow into fields of carnations swollen with anger. tonight the three popes proclaim the revolution against teenage television. seals smash their heads bloody their heads on the elevators the paternoster elevators which delays the holding of their conference. tonight my sister the wind's bride gives blood for the cello of the jericho desert which prompts the trombones ...

Every people have gods to suit their circumstances.

Shutter speed slowed right down, with a twirl. Elizabeth Street Pier, June 2011. City lights. Street lights. Road signs. Cars cars cars. I rarely get the chance to muck about with the camera, but like to have a fiddle every now and then. I like to imagine that this one is really some kind of intergalactic speedway featuring all manner of Martians, Venusians, Mercurians, Uranuses and heaven knows who else ripped to the gills on membrosia and overtaken by a lust for competition. As always, it would end in tears and no little bloodshed.

Courage is knowing what not to fear.

Sometimes Henry just freaks out a little bit. Often, although not always, it involves too much cheese .

Civilization is unbearable, but it is less unbearable at the top.

Night time is the right time for a burst water main in Geilston Bay. May, 2010. Man, I had written a whole LONG and CONVOLUTED post about today's list, and the damn computer ate it! God damn broken my heart. I'm just gonna list it and wipe the tears away and pass on typing it all up again. Bugger. Time for the Sunday Top Five . Music again! Today, we look at <b>My Top <s>Five</s> Ten FIFTEEN Opening Tracks To Albums That I Like Very Much!</b> Bob Dylan, "Like a Rolling Stone", Highway 61 Revisited Marvin Gaye, "What's Going On", What's Going On The Rolling Stones, "Rocks Off", Exile on Main Street Led Zepplin, "Immigrant Song", III R.E.M., "Feeling Gravitys Pull", Fables of the Reconstruction Wilco, "Can't Stand It", Summerteeth Sonic Youth, "Teenage Riot", Daydream Nation Sufjan Stevens, "Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois"...

Education: the inculcation of the incomprehensible into the indifferent by the incompetent.

Night time down on Salamanca Lawns. No you are not drunk. Fairy lights + slow shutter speed * moving about = photograph. June 2010. It's nice to get things of your chest. It's nice to experiment. It's nice to swim against the current every once and a while. It's nice to relax and let yourself be . It's nice.

I think that I am better than the people who are trying to reform me.

Night shots are always something of an experiment for me, so why not go the whole hog and mess about with fiddling to the max? We had an election here in Tasmania yesterday, and the result went as expected (if not as I would have liked). However, the candidate we we're endorsing with a sign got in, continuing my stroke of good results! Well done Mr. O'Byrne. Today's Sunday Top Five? At a push, my Top Five Pollies Whose Signs Have Been Out The Front Of My Joint Over The Years ! Michael Field : A perennial sign in the State scene. We managed to get him up as premier at one point (all because of that sign out front, I'd wager). Greg Peart : the mid-to-late 1980s were not great for the ALP in Braddon. The lack of success in unseating the infinately mediocre Chris Miles should prove that. Sid Sidebottom : a few goes in various elections. A solid, if somewhat uninspiring plodder. Graeme Sturges : got him over the line a couple of elections ago. He's struggled once we'...

The most radical revolutionary will become a conservative the day after the revolution.

I'm experimenting a little with the post production here. I'm giving Hank here a bit of a silver/bronze tint that I think for some reason sharpens up the image somewhat. What do you reckon? These were taken at Seven Mile Beach, one of our regulars.

Modesty is the gentle art of enhancing your charm by pretending not to be aware of it.

I like to call this series Ezra³ .

We do what we must, and call it by the best names we can.

Okay, okay, settle down. It's another "surface of the water" shot. I can't help it that I like them . This one I'll call The Curse of Transcendental idealism or, Wer bin ich? . I don't like the label neo-Kantian . I am far more comfortable proclaiming myself a neo-Fichterian . I proudly proclaim that that self-consciousness is a social phenomenon, and that every subject's self-awareness is predicated on the existence of other rational subjects! Christ, I have to stop reading Kundera on the bus, it brings up all sorts of stuff I thought long buried...
