To be or not to be is not a question of compromise. Either you be or you don't be.

Do you wanna be in my gang? East Derwent Highway, Geilston Bay. September 2011.

If I was tasked with the job of starting a professional sports organisation, I'd make sure that I'd get the branding right. The most recent teams in the Australian Football League (the premier league in the country) are very good examples of poor choices.

Back in 1994 and the formation of Fremantle, I originally felt that the Dockers was an [ahem] interesting choice indeed. Drawing to mind a fat, foul-mouthed warfie calling yet another stop work meeting didn't seem very inspiring; but in retrospect it has proven an original nickname and does capture some of the local colour.

It has been all downhill from there however...

For example: Port Adelaide Power? Accompanying on from the multitude of failed Australian soccer teams (Glory, Pride, Spirit, Kingz), the decidedly un-hip Port Power was launched. In teal.

Really.

Latterly, we have seen the Gold Coast Suns strutting there stuff. While they seem to get plenty of sun up north, I'm not sure about it. What does a sun imply? What sort of stuffed toy merchandise can one do with a sun? The jury is out.

Next year will see the introduction of the Greater Western Sydney Giants. Giants? That was the best they could do? It doesn't even scan. Personally, I would have went with the Greater Western Sydney Discombobulation.

At least that draws the eye.

While not being an avid follower of football, I also find the nicknames of some of the recent era teams a little generic for my liking (I still like to think of Hawthorn as "The Mayblooms"). However, as my maternal roots are in & around Parramatta/Blacktown, I'll be ignoring the "Giants" tag and picking up with the it's-supposed-to-be-derogatory-but-we'll-reclaim-it-with-pride term "Westies". If they win more games next year than the Suns did this year, I'll eat my hat...
Being far from a football fan and only superficially keeping my "awareness" alive for the sake of my students, I must agree about the rather absurd names! The most colourful one I remember is "Collywobbles" - a derogatory term for Collingwood! When I first arrived in Melbourne from Tassie, I asked the students what this word means! The reaction was an uproarious laugh! Now that's a name with spunk and attitude!

What are they running away from? Their home is in the opposite direction.

Smudgeon, there is still a space for someone to be called the 'Wombats'.

Gemma, good to see you. We hate Collingwood in these parts.

Roddy, they are doing a blockie.

Lost inside an adorable illusion and I cannot hide, I'm the one you're using, please don't push me aside, we could've made it cruising, yeah.

Yes it is Theme Thusday again, and today we are talking GLASS . I've three possible hooks to hang my [glass] hat on with this theme. First, the photo! Yes, it is the river again from an odd angle in an interesting light. You can just make out the bottom, which should tell you that I'm right on the shore. In some ways, the distortion of the stones below the surface reminds me of ye olde glass windows, what they call "cylinder blown sheet glass". You can still find some of this around Hobart these days. Thw second link comes from a trip I took to Venice a few years back. You're probably aware that Venice was (is?) a glass-making centre of excellence. If you have ever been there and taken the tour of the glass factories, you might be familiar with the sheer amount of coloured glass that sits at the bottom of the water there. These fragments of glass have been worn down and had their edges dulled by their time in the water, which makes them ample keepsakes for the ...

Hold me now, oh hold me now, until this hour has gone around. And I'm gone on the rising tide, to face Van Dieman's Land

Theme Thursday again, and this one is rather easy. I am Tasmanian, you see, and aside from being all around general geniuses - as I have amply described previously - we are also very familiar with the concept of WATER. Tasmania is the ONLY island state of an ISLAND continent. That means, we're surrounded by WATER. That should help explain why I take so many photographs of water . Tasmania was for a long time the place where the British (an island race terrified of water) sent their poor people most vile and horrid criminals. The sort of folk who would face the stark choice of a death sentence , or transportation to the other end of the world. Their catalogue of crimes is horrifying : stealing bread assault stealing gentlemen's handkerchiefs drunken assault being poor affray ladies being overly friendly with gentlemen for money hitting people having a drink and a laugh public drunkenness being Irish Fenian terrorist activities being Catholic religious subversion. ...

Happy anniversary baby, got you on my mind

No it is not a webcam, but this photograph was taken a mere forty-five ago on my way in to work. Here you can see a good old fashioned Hobart autumn morning, with the rain pelting down and me getting drenched. This one was taken on the corner of Macquarie and Elizabeth, while I was waiting for the lights to change. Come on Ampelmännchen ! Today is my wedding anniversary, an apparently I need to be showering Jen with leather -related goodies. Va-va-vaVOOM! To you Jennifer, here is a poem I wrote this very morning. Anniversary I love you i love you iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou I LOVE you I love YOU iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou I LOVE YOU iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou Happy anniversary
