My concern is how we learn to be genuine human beings.

Go for it Ez. Go hard.

Reality is only a Rorschach ink-blot, you know.

You know that part where Tom Cruise is in his undies and dances around to Bob Seger? This is nothing at all like that.

I owe my solitude to other people.

You'd never ever wish for a bushfire, but they do have the capacity to generate very interesting sunsets.

It's sometimes better to pretend I don't hear the sound of somebody in the nearby woods with a shotgun.

Hot and cold?

I don't have anything to say in any picture. My only interest in photography is to see what something looks like as a photograph. I have no preconceptions.

He doesn't even show caution on the downhill curves!

I don't care what anybody says about me as long as it isn't true.

All I need to do is Photoshop in some great big explosions and cars flying about in the background and this photograph is complete...

I photograph to see what the world looks like in photographs.

A child's education should begin at least one hundred years before he is born.

Walking home from cricket training. Nelumi Road, Lindisfarne. December 2012. Red Harvest , Dashiell Hammett: as hard boiled as a diamond. As strong evocation of nastiness, cynicism, greed and the day to day horrors of human interactions as you'd like to see. All the more startling for being a great success in 1929. A . Breakfast at Tiffany's , Truman Capote: The famous film rather missed the point of this book, didn't it? I liked it a lot. A- . The Wonderbox: Curious histories of how to live , Roman Krznaric: An interesting mix of stories and ideas envisaged as ‘practical history’, that is, the art of gaining insights from our predecessors on how to live better lives today. A lot of this stuff I already do, but thought provoking nonetheless. B+ .

The problem in defence is how far you can go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without.

Getting dark. Corner of Sandy Bay Road and Hampdon Road, Battery Point. July 2012. Theme Thursday and this week is one for RECOLLECTIONS. You know, memories. Nostalgia. Remembering. Recall. A time when everyone was nicer. Everyone was more moral, ethical. More polite, more genuine, more reliable. People were hardworking. Kids were considerate. Men were made of sterner stuff and women had more respect for themselves. Communities stuck together. Things had value and people valued things other than things. People had values and values meant something. A dollar was a dollar, a pound was a pound and we all knew where we stood. You remember. Streets were clean. Men doffed their caps, women demurred with grace. Children feared the consequences of things and our leaders had a firm grip on the whip hand. Times were good. Things were hard but people were harder. People were more resilient. Tougher. Leaner. Meaner. Life was a challenge but we were better at rising to challenges. Disse...

As blushing will sometimes make a whore pass for a virtuous woman, so modesty may make a fool seem a man of sense.

Going home. Sandy Bay Road, onto Davey Street. June 2012. As you know, the Internet is a wonderful place filled with the rich and varied treasures of the world holds. Unfortunately, the Internet are these parts does not appear to be working! I'm going to have to postpone the weblinks for another day. If this post ever manages to actually go live, please feel free to stick around and enjoy the view...

The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don't want, drink what you don't like, and do what you'd rather not.

My opinion is that universities don't stifle enough writers. There's many a best seller that could have been prevented by a good teacher.

Achtung! Ampelmännchen sagt halt! The point just after Davey Street turns into Sandy Bay Road. June 2012. Just the one book finished this week, and a trip back in time with Mussolini And The Rise Of Fascism by the academic/ historian Donald Sassoon. Sassoon is the author of what is to my mind the definitive work (and weighty tome coming in well over 1,000 pages long) on continental European socialism, One Hundred Years of Socialism , so I was looking forward to his analysis of the development of fascism in Italy. You might already be familiar with the tale: in 1919 the former socialist newspaper editor-cum small time political player Benito Mussolini had assembled a ragtag group of followers in Milan and launched the movement that was to result three years later in a dictatorship. This itself would last 23 years, and draw Italy into an escalating number of foreign interventions, ending ultimately with a disastrous war that was to leave large parts of her in ruins. Oddly enough...

Do something. If it doesn't work, do something else.

Lots o' dogs. Howrah Beach, as seen from Little Howrah Beach. March 2012. Another Watery Wednesday and today, we pop down to Howrah Beach and enjoy a canine afternoon delight . Naturally, these evenings I usually find myself in a state of extreme concentration, the task being that of ensuring that some stray furious accumulation of muscle, sinew and enormous set of jaws on petite legs pit bull does not snap and make a meal of one of my children...
