I can see that

John Campbell's pictures for sad children never fails to tickle my fancy (ooh er missus!). This one particularly resonates.

Any resemblance to actual people, alive or dead, is purely coincidental...

There are a number of people that I had in mind to sit behind that desk, but chickened out and went with 'generic guy that kind of looks like Tom Cruise'. Similarly, I couldn't get the female character there that I had in mind (who herself nominated Rocky Dennis for the role), so went with Jeanne Garofolo instead. At three episodes, this comic strip gig is already two more than I had envisaged.

People I know

I'm kind of getting addicted to this lark!

Baby steps

With all of these strips and toons that I like and have chosen to feature , I really thought that I should stop copping out and take my first few tentative steps into the craft and try my own hand. Inspired by a bit of banter at Patrea's Pasadena blog , I'd engage in a little self analysis.

Working blue again

I have previously featured Married to the Sea , but I am in the kind of mood to post another one of their comics today. So I have. As is their want, the language is a little fruity, so if you're offended by that sort of thing, look away now ...

I really should use "GODDAMN" more...

I realise that I haven’t featured a cartoon in a while, so I thought that I’d shared the latest from xkdc , a leader in the art of tragicomic ‘toons. I did enjoy this very much, and would be quite happy to claim this as my own epitaph. Unfortunately my mobile is always switched to silent vibrate (oh er...), and I only ever answer calls from Jen anyway!

That's jus' got to be jelly, 'cos jam jus' don' shake like that

If you’re like me, and take pleasure in cruelly and insensitively laughing about other people looking stupid; you are sure to enjoy Sexy People , a website devoted (oddly enough), to photographs of sexy people. Here is a favourite of mine:

Not so much of the force, Luke

A new toon. It's been a few weeks, but I always like to share the one's that make me LOL (I hope that means what I think and not something utterly filthy, you never know online). This one is from Phil at The Rut . I've been following it for a while, and it constantly amuses, so is well worth checking out if you like that sort of thing. I'm not much of a Star Wars fan these days (although I did see Return of the Jedi a few times at the cinema a very long time ago), but always thought that there was something special about C3PO's relationship with R2D2. It's good to see the tenderness translated into all areas. [Note for uninitiated: WD-40 is the trademark name of my favourite 'penetrating' oil, and it's a ripper cleaner and anti-corrosion spray, but best of all is its all round use as a lubricant to all things metal.]

Size Matters

Another comic. And a filthy comic at that! You might have come across this one: XKCD , a webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language.

Working blue

Be warned, this cartoon has a touch of 'blue' language. That said, I heartily endorse this message. If you like the 'toons, check out The Rut . It's packed full of them!

There is always a poignancy in little tragedies

You may have figured out by now that I enjoy odd comics. I have linked to a few in the past , and now want to share a new one that I've found and am enjoying. This one is called Pictures for sad children , and is written and drawn by John Campbell. He describes his work as "pretty okay" and "about a bad feeling you get when you are feeling good, or a good feeling you get when you are feeling bad". Thus, these comics may not be appropriate for sad children. Have a look, you'll probably like them.

Sports logos worthy of ridicule or admiration (or both): DUD LOGOS

In the world of art, there is a concept known as “so bad that it is good”. Some examples include Ed Wood’s Plan Nine From Outer Space ; Swayze’s Road House ; Schwarzenegger's Commando ; the occasional entrant in The Eurovision Song Contest ; McGonagall’s The Tay Bridge Disaster . I will be honest with you and say that don’t feel that any of today’s logos qualify. In fact, I feel that more likely they belong in the far broader category of “so bad that it is horrible” class. So, lest my rambling on gets in the way of my rambling on, I offer to you this week’s category! EPISODE THREE: DUD LOGOS These two featured just two weeks ago, but I really could not pass them over. If we are talking bad art, it just isn't possible to overlook the Hamilton Tigers 1921 effort that fused the tiger and the Elephant Man (on the left). Rendering what is arguably the most majestic and fine-looking creature in the world as a malformed and miserable mutant takes some beating, and ...

I made it myself. You can make one too. Just go to this website . [Polite nod to the gang at Mental Floss .]

Sports logos worthy of ridicule or admiration (or both): ANIMALS IN SWEATERS

Today I present to you the second instalment of Sports Logos Worthy of Ridicule or Admiration . Last week we dealt with Tigers, and I found fertile ground for derision and approval. This week though, we lean a little more heavily towards the ridicule. Given the topic, it could not be avoided. So, without further ado, this week’s topic! EPISODE TWO: ANIMALS IN SWEATERS It appears to be a noted feature of the US collegiate system that animals are often best presented in nifty sweaters with embroidered logos. I would like to think that today’s collection proves otherwise. Here we have the archetype: the poshly-named college jock from sunny Florida. The Florida Gators logo seen here was in use for most of the 1990s. It shows Albert E. Gator, who – judging by appearances – is a constipated former Marine drill sergeant positively radiating a passive/aggressive tendency. I personally think that Albert looks a bit of a nob, but not everybody thinks would agree. In June 2007, Sports Illustrate...

Just think, right now as you read this, some guy somewhere is gettin' ready to hang himself

The title is a continuation of the George Carlin tribute. As is today's photograph. I can think of nothing more that he would like than a picture of two rubbish bins (that's correct, the old brain is struggling today). So what I will do is post one last George Carlin quote for the day. This one is about 'irony'. Like George, I am continually frustrated by the misuse of the word itself. Not a day goes by when somebody fails to say to me "how ironic" and I think about directing them to Carlin's rant from Brain Droppings : Irony deals with opposites; it has nothing to do with coincidence. If two baseball players from the same hometown, on different teams, receive the same uniform number, it is not ironic. It is a coincidence. If Barry Bonds attains lifetime statistics identical to his father's, it will not be ironic. It will be a coincidence. Irony is "a state of affairs that is the reverse of what was to be expected; a result opposite to and in moc...

Some words for the late George Carlin

To continue a great day of news, Reuters are reporting that George Carlin has died. To quote the man himself: "Bummer". [A message to the faint hearted, please look away now.] [Are all the faint hearted people gone? You better be, because otherwise you won't be able to complain...] ANYWAY. In his honour, I would just like to say a few words: Shit Piss Fuck Cunt Cocksucker Motherfucker Tits Thank you and goodnight. [For an explanation, please click here . Man that Wikipedia is quick!]

Humour can be dissected as a frog can, but the thing dies in the process and the innards are discouraging to any but the pure scientific mind

Another little video today, featuring you-know-who. Henry unfortunately appears to have developed a very French sense of humour. Farts, burps and (especially) falling over have now in our house reached giddying heights of hilarity. Combine this with a newly developed ability to count to three (yes THREE), and we have a real little Louis de Funès in the house. The new game involves counting to three, and then falling over in the manner of someone recently shot by a ruthless villain. We then repeat this approximately three thousand times. In order to prevent serious injury, you will note that I have positioned a number of pillows for the budding comic genius to break his fall. Of course, this does not always work, as his aim is shoddy. Thus, we have had our fair share of tears. Indeed, I considered posting one of those videos, but I am saving that up for the grand prize on Australia’s Funniest Home Videos (or, as I like to call it, ‘People getting seriously hurt and occasionally winni...

Sports logos worthy of ridicule or admiration (or both): TIGERS

A brand spanking new concept today, in the vein of some of my other ongoing and broken down ideas, it will no doubt have some legs. I have over the past few months amassed a large number of logos of various sports teams from every area of competition. The majority are North American (as is often the nature of the online world), but I am always on the lookout for more (that is an open invitation to point me in the direction of where I might find them). My problem has been that I have so many now, but did not really have an idea of how to present them to the world. So, I have decided to run with themes. So this week, for the inaugural Sports logos worthy of ridicule or admiration (or both) , I have decided to run with Tigers . EPISODE ONE: T I G E R S As the mascot of a sports team, the tiger can rarely be beaten. In real life they are a powerful and majestic beast, with a pretty cool set of colours that you can swipe straight off the shelf. Let’s face it; tigers are maybe the most re...

The chief duty of government is to keep the peace and stand out of the sunshine of the people

I have blogged on Kate Beaton's comics previously . Kate has uploaded a bunch of new comics and I couldn't look past this one featuring a meeting of the minds that we have all been waiting for. Yes, Garfield (the cat) and James A. Garfield (twentieth President of the United States, most famous for being assasinated). I really like her work, so if you are into this sort of thing check it out. [Note, I do like very much how she has continued envisioning Pope John Paul II as a 'boyz in the hood' kind of guy.]

Funny ha ha

I think that this cartoon is funny. In fact, I think that most of the cartoons on the Married to the Sea website are funny. You know, they don't call it the "champagne of comics" for no reason!
