Between flattery and admiration there often flows a river of contempt.

Divorcee? Colville Street, Battery Point. August 2013. PEACE.

Really to sin you have to be serious about it.

Ezra and I like to share a saveloy whenever we are waiting for the bus.

The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears it is true.

There is a hole in my plan. Lindisfarne Village, Lindisfarne. March 2012. Tuesday Q and A and we visit the mysterious Scottish Meme ! 1. Where are you from and where do you live now? I am from the city of Burnie - on the Tasmanian Riviera (the north west coast)- but I now live in Hobart, which is 600 kilometres away to the south east. 2. Favourite childhood story/ book/ film? No single one in particular. Off the top of my head I know that I enjoyed Peter and the Wolf , George's Marvellous Medicine and Watership Down . 3. If you could change gender for a day what would you do? Once I shifted from in front of the mirror I might nip down to the pool. 4. Do you feel you family is complete or would you like more/some children? I think that we're right. Four seems a good amount. Any more kids and we are outnumbered! 5. Nothing is a greater impediment to being on good terms with others than being ill at ease with yourself.

What's up with that? Regent Street, Sandy Bay. October 2011. Busy busy busy!

Next to a circus there ain't nothing that packs up and tears out faster than the Christmas spirit.

Very little action at the bus stop. Campbell Street, Hobart. December 2010. Boxing Day? BAH! The Easter eggs will be out soon. This year - excluding picture books - I've read eighty-five books! Jen guessed at sixty, I was thinking seventy, so eighty-five is a sounf tally that leaves me a good selection for today's Sunday Top Five: My Top Five Books That I've Read This Year! Bear in mind that these are books I've read and enjoyed this year, not books released this year. Let's see if this year's crop can top last year ... Fatelessness by Imre Kertész Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene Popular Music from Vittula by Mikael Niemi The Restraint of Beasts by Magnus Mills Just missing the cut, and again in chronological order (in terms of my reading it): The Quiet American , Graham Greene; Closely observed trains , Bohumil Hrabal; Mercedes-Benz , Pawel Huelle; The Middle Parts of Fortune , Frederic Manning; The End of the Affair ,...

Meanings are not determined by situations, but we determine ourselves by the meanings we give to situations.

If thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.

When does a bus stop stop being a bus stop? St Johns Park, New Town. December 2010. What's your favourite piece of technology, and how has it improved your life? Broad-scale public sanitation/plumbing. I am never one to over-estimate the importance of running water. It has improved my life in too many ways to count. When was the last time you used it, and what for? [At time of writing] I had a shower after Touch Football. Much needed, as we didn’t have any substitutes and I was on all game. What additional features would you add if you could? It seems pretty good as is. I’m a fan of water pressure, so we can always amp that up a bit! Do you think it will be obsolete in 10 years' time? Let’s just ensure that every bugger has an equal chance at having it before we render it obsolete first! What always frustrates you about technology in general? The rapidity with which we become dependent on it, and it ceases to be liberating and becomes a constraint. If you had one tip about gett...

their own happiness will protect us

Heading to work in Winter. Geilston Bay. June 2010. We know that the seasons are changing. You get a reasonable read on this when you leave home at the same time each day, and arrive home at the same time each day. The thing that strikes me most at the moment is we have more light at both ends of the day. Contrast this with June in the photo above, which was taken at 7:15 am. Have a poem. God Has Pity On Kindergarten Children , Yehuda Amichai God has pity on kindergarten children, He pities school children -- less. But adults he pities not at all. He abandons them, And sometimes they have to crawl on all fours In the scorching sand To reach the dressing station, Streaming with blood. But perhaps He will have pity on those who love truly And take care of them And shade them Like a tree over the sleeper on the public bench. Perhaps even we will spend on them Our last pennies of kindness Inherited from mother, So that their own happiness will protect us Now and on other days.

It is well known that Beauty does not look with a good grace on the timid advances of Humour.

Aren't you cold. Elizabeth Street in Winter. August 2010. Dolly birds draped about in bikinis. A standard response when you think "Winter in Tasmania". I am looking for ideas. I’m happy to trawl the ‘net for more, but I thought that I’d throw open the comments section for suggestions. What should I write about? Any questions that I should answer? Anything that you’d like me to photograph? The creative well is running dry, and my capacity to draw comics [you know who you are] is limited!

Power is not only what you have but what the enemy thinks you have.

The beautiful morning sunshine lamp shine of Hobart in winter. Elizabeth Street, Hobart. August 2010. The combination of a show shutter speed – necessary to cope with the poor light – and street lamps still on – because of poor light – have delivered an interesting effect in this photo here. I do like the way that prolonged exposure to the blaze of what is really a low watt globe almost burns out the [ahem] film . This leads me to my next instalment… 51. DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING? No, no I most definitely do not. A couple of chickens dipped in ink. On acid. At a Prodigy concert. 52. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LUNCH MEAT? Lunch meat? I like spicy Hungarian salami. I like ham. I had pastrami today. 53. ANY BAD HABITS? I have many, many bad habits. 54. WHAT IS YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING CD ON THE SHELF? My CDs are all in boxes at the top of Henry’s cupboard. Most embarrassing CD? I had a clear out prior to the last move, and I’m not sure what is left (hundreds remain). The most embarrassing CD...

Nothing can come of nothing.

Looking north on New Town Road. New Town, July 2010. I can cope with a bit of darkness and gloom if what little sun there is by late-afternoon keeps delivering the copper-toned skies! 11. THE BEST TV SHOW EVER CREATED: Seinfeld has to be considered. A show about nothing? Absolutely! 12. THE LAST PERSON YOU TALKED TO? Jennifer 13. DO YOU GET SCARED IN THE DARK? No, although stick me in an unsavoury situation, and I might well feel uncomfortable in the dark! 14. THE LAST PERSON TO MAKE YOU CRY? Frederic Manning. 15. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOGNE / PERFUME? Eau de Krispy. 16. WHAT KIND OF HAIR/EYE COLOR DO YOU LIKE ON THE OPPOSITE SEX? Brunettes with eyes. Nothing too pale. 17. WOULD YOU RATHER BE SMART OR FUNNY? I’d like to think that I have a reasonable grasp on both. I’m modest too… 18. COFFEE OR ENERGY DRINKS? Coffee. I have honestly never had an energy drink in my life. I don’t feel like I’m missing much. 19. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PIZZA TOPPING? Cheese. Lots of cheese. 20. IF YOU C...

Sooner or later, one has to take sides. If one is to remain human.

Odd things painted on walls in New Town, #1. New Town Road. July 2010. Who said that holding hands is powerless Huh? I’m not sure that that is a sentence. Traditionally (and far too simplistically), a sentence is traditionally defined as a group of words that expresses a complete idea and that includes a subject and a verb . Convention also dictates that it ends with a full stop, question mark, or exclamation point. Who said that holding hands is powerless It looks like a question, but we don’t have a question mark. We have a subject, verb and even an adjective, but I am not convinced that we have a complete idea . Who said that holding hands is powerless I do wish that these hip young urban artists would try out their sloganeering prior to getting out into the streets to create their intertextual self-reflexive hyperstylistic post-structural syntaxtically illiterate counter-cultural mash-ups. I mean really . Every day I wait that that bus stop and every day I wonder what on Earth it...

He will have true glory who despises it.

On the way to the bus stop one foggy morning. Geilston Bay, June 2010. Walking to walk in the fog is a pleasure. Well, it's more of a pleasure than walking to work in the poring rain...

The best way to have a good idea is to have a lot of ideas.

A grey old day in Hobart today, but it is anything but grey in my heart! I thought after yesterday’s tale of poor parenting and the outrage that it prompted, I’d best switch on the positive vibe and look on the bright side of life. In order to do that, I felt it appropriate to post some lovely blossoms that I photographed right next to the bus stop this morning Congratulations are in order for Paul Krugman, on his receipt of the Nobel Prize for Economics. Krugman will be a familiar name to many – even those not interested in the dismal science , but I will forever remember him for helping convince me of the positives that can emerge from the on the liberalisation of trade, and more generally to the multiplicity of impacts related to the globalisation of capital. His work on Mexico and the Philippines in the mid-1990s, in particular, helped me broaden my outlook considerably and helped lead to the reconstruction of a lad who at that point was a wholly unreconstructed social democrat ...
