Happy New Year Everybody!

Ein glückliches neues Jahr! Feliz año nuevo! Stastny Novy Rok! Chuc mung nam moi! Xin nian yu kuai! Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu! Barka da sabuwar shekara! Shuvo noboborsho!

What makes life dreary is the want of a motive.

Greetings from Singapore! Is anybody out there?!?!

Anyone who says he can see through women is missing a lot.

More old boilers!

That it will never come again is what makes life sweet.

What's Ezra doing out there?

Age considers; youth ventures.

Sunday stroll. Gellibrand Point, South Arm Peninsula. June 2013. Wordless Wednesday. Family portrait. Gellibrand Point, South Arm Peninsula. June 2013. Hen and Ez lead the way. Gellibrand Point, South Arm Peninsula. June 2013.

The essence of life is statistical improbability on a colossal scale.

Say "Roquefort"!

Everyone is entitled to his own nostalgia.

Ezra, Jen and Hen. Oozing sincerity. Boat Harbour. April 2013. Theme Thursday . ANZAC Day. INTOXICATE. Sad but true. Beer, flags, patriotism, narrow minded bigots. All the same.

Many of us spend half of our time wishing for things we could have if we didn't spend half our time wishing.

The gang's all here. Table Cape Lighthouse, Table Cape. April 2013. Sunday Stealing: The 5000 Question Meme, The Final Part One 76. Do you prefer Disney or Warner Brothers? It depends on one's mood. For the shorter film, give me WB. For the feature length, probably Disney. 77. What is the first animal you would run to see if you went to the zoo? I do like the very large bears. 78. Would you consider yourself to be romantic? How might you define it? If 'traditional' (i.e. chocolates, wine, roses and trite platitudes) not in the slightest. If you're more practically-oriented (i.e. housework, cooking, child rearing), then definitely! 79. If the earth stopped rotating would we all fly off? Don't be silly. 80. What is the one thing that you love to do so much that you would make sacrifices to be able to do it? I make sacrifices to do the things that I want to do already! For example, 'career'. 81. If you (and everyone) had to lose one righ...

The best time for you to hold your tongue is the time you feel you must say something or bust.

Sexy boys and sexy girls. Opossum Bay Beach, Half Moon Bay. January 2013. Another Sunday Stealing Q and A, The Mixed Bag Meme ! 1. How many songs are in your library? 25,288. Give or take a few. 2. Do you like Christmas music? Not very much. 3. What magazines do you have subscriptions to? I don't. I do regularly read BBC History Magazine and pick up The Economist every now and then. 4. What is your favourite scent? Sandalwood is always nice. 5. Do you give money to charity? Only when I know where it is going. 6. What is your theme song? Gimme Some Lovin' always gets me rocking. 7. What's in your wallet? Money, cards, receipts. Nothing unusual. 8. Do you generally think before you act, or act before you think? It is possible that I think too much before I act. 9. Is there anything that has made you unhappy these days? I am trying very hard to let things slide. 10. Do you have a good body-image? Historically, no. More recently, I'm maki...

The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children.

The gang's all here! Shag Bay, Geilston Bay. December 2012. Another Tuesday, another Q and A stolen from the resurrected Sunday Stealing! This week, the The Deleted Meme Who is your favourite artist (Any field)? That’s far too big a questions to do any justice to! No, I just can’t do it. Let me limit to painters, and the list includes Caillebotte, J.M.W. Turner, Korovin, Marc, Aivazovsky, Boudin, Monet, Rousseau, Klee, Pollock, Schwitters and Larionov. Off the top of my head. Describe yourself: A riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. How do you feel today? Pretty good. Describe the area where you currently live. Smokey. Very very smokey.  If you could go anywhere, where would you go? Somewhere nice and quiet where everything wasn’t on fire. Your favourite form of transportation: I do like a nice boat ride. Or a train. Failing that, my feet serve me well! Your best friend is: Already married. You and your best friends are: I said, married! Wh...

I ask you to judge me by the enemies I have made.

The gang's all here. Spring Beach, Orford. July 2012. It's a challenging Q and A for a bloke that has barely watched a movie in the past ten years with the glory that is The Movie Time Meme , once again stolen from Sunday Stealing. Thankfully, a large portion of my life pre-children was dedicated to watching films! 1. What is your all-time favourite movie costume? John Hurt’s get-up in The Elephant Man is pretty good. 2. What classic film would you nominate for a remake? If a film is a ‘classic’, it seems rather pointless to ‘remake’ it, wouldn’t you think? Watch the original! 3. Name your favourite femme fatale. Jessica Rabbit. 4. Name the best movie title. I like the simplicity of Jaws . That said, I have some time for the expansive The Assassination of Jesse James... 5. Describe the worst performance by a child actor that you’ve ever seen. It’s not really a short list, is it? Generally I would opt for any child with bright red hair that is aiming for ‘cu...

The worst men often give the best advice.

I confess that we DID get a bandicoot to take this photo for us. In retrospect, she did a better job than I could have possible hoped for.

The knowledge of yourself will preserve you from vanity.

The usual suspects. Clifton Beach. April 2012. A very appropriate Theme Thursday today, as I had lined up this shot of my FAMILY well in advance. FAMILY is a funny old concept. Some people say. “you can’t choose your FAMILY” but I am not convinced of that. Lots of people seem to be choosing their FAMILY. They have a FAMILY, change their mind, then bugger off and start a new one. It’s happening all over the place! However, I have already chosen my FAMILY. All up, they are a decent, dependable lot. I’m thankful that they’re all so good looking, because it does make the hard times more bearable. In an approach that we should have taken with rabbits and cane toads, we’ve kept the numbers down lest we be overrun with the buggers (they’re loud enough as it is) and my ethical object to polygamy has kept the marital situation in check. Anyone who knows anything about that television show that was not in the slightest about Mormons will tell you that one wife should be plenty enough...

First you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you.

Somewhere out there, just past South Arm and Bruny Islands, lies the Southern Ocean. Franklin Wharf, Hobart. April 2012. Wordless Wednesday.

She was good at playing abstract confusion in the same way that a midget is good at being short.

The gang is all here! Argyle Street, Hobart. February 2012. Maybe I posted this on Theme Thursday to get a REACTION. My face is so rarely seen on this here blog that it usually causes a flurry of judgements, whispers and swoons belly-laughs. Yet that little internal conversation set me thinking (understandably) about the third of Newton's laws of motion. You know, the one about how forces occur in pairs. Actio et reactio . "Every action is accompanied by a REACTION of equal magnitude but opposite direction." So then I wanted to write it down. First, I thought that it looks like this: Action → REACTION But then I thought that it might be better expressed like this: Action ↔ REACTION That is not right though. Therefore, I thought that it must be. Action → REACTION ↔ REACTION However, even that does not seem right. Ultimately, I have settled for: Action → REACTION ↔ REACTION ↔ REACTION ↔ REACTION ↔ REACTION ↔ REACTION [repeat to infinity] But I'm still not certain. Ar...

Take the course opposite to custom and you will almost always do well.

Arguments. Always arguments.

And soon, too soon, we part with pain, To sail o'er silent seas again.

We spend a lot of time around boats, for people who don't own a boat.

I am what time, circumstance, history, have made of me, certainly, but I am also, much more than that. So are we all.

Okay, competition time... What are they watching?

We are all worms. But I believe that I am a glow-worm.

We've had a bit of sunshine around these parts for the past week, so I thought it a timely reminder to post this picture of some cool cats sat up top of the local mountain. Check out the look on Ezra's face and tell me whether or not you reckon he's enjoying that blustery wind slamming into his face!

A long habit of not thinking a thing wrong gives it a superficial appearance of being right.

Henry is surfing. Ezra is a crocodile. I am not sure what Jen is doing.
