A man can fail many times, but he isn't a failure until he begins to blame somebody else.

Angry crab is... angry. Bellerive Bluff, Bellerive. July 2013. Wordless Wednesday. Angry crab's house. Bellerive Bluff, Bellerive. July 2013.

Always be a poet, even in prose.

Hairy crab. Fossil Cove/ Soldiers Point, Tinderbox. May 2013. Birdseye: The Adventures of a Curious Man , Mark Kurlansky: Another excellent foray into social history by Kurlansky; this time through the biography of Clarence 'Bob' Birdseye, the “can-do” American inventor and innovator that spawned an entire branch of the food industry. It peters out somewhat by the end, but all in all an interesting and entertaining read. C+ .

Arrange whatever pieces come your way.

Formally a crab. Bellerive Bluff, Bellerive. April 2013. A vintage Sunday Top Five today that I know the whole World has been waiting for. Yes, it is My Top Five Favourite Tracks By English Post-Punk Weirdos, The Fall! Blindness Totally Wired Theme From Sparta FC Reformation The Classical

You are precisely as big as what you love and precisely as small as what you allow to annoy you.

Angry crab. Little Coningham Beach, Coningham. January 2013. Today's Sunday Top Five TEN was prompted by Henry's probing question today regarding my opinion on the fine strand of music known as " The Blues ". Now, by and large I'm a traditionalist, so I belted out a fire and brimstone version of Mannish Boy (complete with simulated audience whoops and hollers) to establish my admiration. Which got me thinking, What Are My Top Ten Blues Songs ? Muddy Waters, Mannish Boy John Lee Hooker, Boom Boom Boom Boom John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Ramblin' On My Mind Blind Willie Johnson, Praise God I'm Satisfied Bessie Smith, Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Ou t Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Born In Chicago Etta James, I'd Rather Go Blind Albert King, Born Under A Bad Sign Big Mama Thornton, Hound Dog Sonny Boy Williamson, Don't Start Me Talkin'

Those who make their dress a principal part of themselves, will, in general, become of no more value than their dress.

Crab #1. Little Howrah Beach. March 2013. Theme Thursday again. GREENERY. Hmmmmmmmmm. Ummmmm. Give me a second. Crab #2. Little Howrah Beach. March 2013. (tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick) Crab #3. Little Howrah Beach. March 2013. Yeah. Sorry. I've got nothing this week. How about I post this up now and promise to add a drabble this afternoon on the topic?

It is always the best policy to speak the truth, unless, of course, you are an exceptionally good liar.

Mr Krabs? Is that you...?

He who does not prevent a crime when he can, encourages it.

Claws. Fossil Beach. January 2013. Oops. I forgot to post!

There are bad people who would be less dangerous if they were quite devoid of goodness.

Fin. Opossum Bay Beach, South Arm Peninsula. December 2012. Theme Thursday and there is not a whole lot of hope for this crab in terms of a REBIRTH. The Buddhist concept of vijñāna-srotām might offer some chance for this blighter, but I remain to be convinced that the crab subscribed to a Buddhist theology. There is a chance (however slight) that the crab was once the son of God/ awaits Frashokereti / is an inhabitant of Sheol/ or that Yawm al-Qiyāmah is just around the corner; but as I said, the odds are against it. No, the crab is dead. The best it can hope for is that some bird had a good meal and will go on to be a good parent and maybe (unlikely, but you never know) the children of that bird will open a crab infirmary for lame or destitute crabs in the future.

The sure way to be cheated is to think one's self more cunning than others.

Just to continue on the hermit crab theme for one more post...

Self-confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings.

Look what we found. Opossum Bay Beach, Opossum Bay. December 2012. Theme Thursday again and I'm stuck for what kind of RIBBONS to wear in my hair. Complicating this is the fact that I've had my hair cut quite short, which limits the size, scope and number of RIBBONS that will fit. I could staple them on (or use nails), but I'm reticent to do that. Thus I'm stuck with choosing one. Initially I thought that I could happily support the Levellers' emphasis on the expansion of sovereign rights during the English Civil War, but did not want any Canadian readers to think that I was declaring my unequivocal support for pornography. Nor do I have an express desire to support the troops in Pakistan or feel any particular solidarity with Chechnya (good luck to 'em though). I love blue, but really, blue ribbons are so passée and I couldn't think of a greater insult that have someone think that I supported either the British Tory party nor Ukranian President ...

The most useful thing about a principle is that it can always be sacrificed to expediency.

HENRY HAS CRAB S !

Those who are easily shocked should be shocked more often.

Dead crab. Or maybe it's sleeping. Little Howrah Beach. January 2012. Theme Thursday again and our minds are firmly fixed on the concept of STORM. Well, I should really say that my little mind is actually geared towards STURM ( und Drang ). Typically, people have translated STURM und Drang as "STORM and Stress" and use it to describe the proto-Romantic movement in German literature and music that occurred in the late-eighteenth century. Ever the dissenter, I prefer the less frequent translation of "STORM and Urge ". The implications of the difference is not a minor one. STURM und Drang was characterised by the liberation of individual subjectivity and the embrace of spectacular extremes of emotion – i.e. ladies fainting, men challenging each other to duels/ love affairs/ adventures. This free expression emerged largely in reaction to the perceived constraints of rationalism imposed by the Enlightenment and its associated aesthetic movements. An example, previ...

Exaggerated sensitiveness is an expression of the feeling of inferiority.

The evidence... Calverts Beach. January 2011. Sunday Top Five? How about My Top Five Numbers ? One ( 1 ) [ i ] Two ( 2 ) [ ii ] Three ( 3 ) [ iii ] Four ( 4 ) [ iv ] Five ( 5 ) [ v ]

Conviction never so excellent, is worthless until it coverts itself into conduct.

Dienstag! That means another Q and A stolen from Sunday Stealing. Today we are ripping off a blogger and blog called BlueLifeMemories . Welcome to the Blue Memory Meme, Part One 1) If the whole world were listening to you right now, what would you say? "Hello everybody!" 2) If you could meet anyone on this earth, who would it be? Someone with some answers. 3) You just got a free plane ticket to anywhere. You have to depart right now. Where are you gonna go? Take me to Prague. 4) What do you think about most? I have a tendency to run whatever is on my mind through a whole bunch of lenses. Over and over and over again. 5) You have the opportunity to spend a romantic night with the music celebrity of your choice. Who would it be? "Romantic"? At least it beats the usual "date" question. Oh I don't know. Someone fun. Maybe someone like Pink or Katy Perry. She could bring Elmo. 6) You can erase any horrible experience from your past. What will it be? Some s...

There are a terrible lot of lies going about the world, and the worst of it is that half of them are true.

It's a crab! Little Howrah Beach, July 2011. Today I am stealing the Q & A from The Manchester Guardian ! When were you happiest? Probably when I was young enough to know otherwise. What is your greatest fear? To be unnecessary. What is your earliest memory? Kevin Bartlett's goals in the 1980 Grand Final is the earliest I can put a date on. Which living person do you most admire, and why? ' Most ' is a very big call, but I've always admired how Václav Havel goes about his business. What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? Perfection discipline. What is the trait you most deplore in others? Indiscipline. Property aside, what's the most expensive thing you've bought? Ummmm. Maybe a computer. What is your most treasured possession? I'm not sure that I have one. Possessions are a little bit overrated. What would your super power be? Being able to poo money would be good. What makes you...

The people who live in a golden age usually go around complaining how yellow everything looks.

Everyone in our house – except for Henry – loves crabs. In fact, our most recent expedition to Little Howrah Beach yielded a fantastic haul of good breeding stock for the forthcoming crab racing grand prix !

The supreme accomplishment is to blur the line between work and play.

Ezra is always keen on getting up close and personal with the wildlife. Henry, well Henry prefers to keep his distance…

By its very nature, the beautiful is isolated from everything else. From beauty, no road leads to reality.

I am so happy that the scourge of angry robot dinosaurs has been wiped from the face of the Earth…

Life consists not in holding good cards but in playing those you hold well.

Another day, another crab-hunting expedition...

I think people should be allowed to do anything they want. We haven't tried that for a while. Maybe this time it'll work.

Here is a shot of Henry and regular blog pest commenter Roddy looking for crabs up at Fossil Bluff in Wynyard. You might just be able to see Bass Strait in the background. As a bonus, here is an arty black and white portrait to scare people off ever getting tattoos. They fade people, and it isn't pleasant when the skin stretches and contracts over time!
