Sentimental irony is a dog that bays at the moon while pissing on graves.

So we’ve got some water and a rope again. This was taken this morning in Sullivan’s Cove, right in the heart of Hobart. Thanks to Willits’ finest, Elaine , I have one of these interweb tube meme things to relieve me of the need to be overly creative. This is a good time for one of these things actually, as I’ve been up since half-past-three in the morning (Ezra got back to sleep, I didn’t) and I’m not faring too well. All I have to do is reveal five details about myself, and I figure that I can probably manage that so I shall give it a go. 1) I fail to understand what is so special about the work of Vincent Van Gogh. In general, I think that the post-Impressionists were pretty rubbish when compared to the Impressionists. 2) I think that Gough Whitlam seems like a bit of a wanker, to be honest, and I can’t understand why so many people – with many of whom I share comparable political views – worship him. 3) I sometimes regret not throwing in “Napoleon” as a middle name for Henry. 4) I s...

We are stuck with technology when what we really want is just stuff that works.

This will appear on day two of my enforced sojourn from teh Internets. I expect that my rss feeds will have blown out to the thousand plus already. I would like to cry, but my needlessly masculinist upbringing prevents me. Perhaps that is something that I can work on instead of looking at LOL sharks.

Houston, we've had a problem here.

Can you believe it? Three computers in the house and they are dropping like flies! That and the fact that I am off work until Monday has severely constrained my adventures on the INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY over the next week. I am not sure what I can do. I am sure that it will involve a lot of crying, shaking and fetal positions. I have again had to dip into the grab bag of photos, and suspect that this blasting that took place just down from work a few weeks back, coupled with a shark attack and far too little sleep of late have all contributed to the technical difficulties that seem to have plagued me of late. For the moment then, I can only apologise for the brevity.

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

You're all probably already well across this, as it's been all over teh Internets like, a million years already, but I keep meaning to post it and keep forgetting. Today I haven't. You see, I took this photo: And then I uploaded it into Bakumatsu Koshashin Generator , clicked on Convert , and zapp! A ye olden dayes Henry! Click the link and you can do it too, if you want to.

Mine eyes have seen tha phat ass

I am unsure if this has already been around the Internets three times already, but I like it. I am on the record as being keen on new ways to present data. Check out Fleshmap's info-graphic of body parts mentioned in song lyrics , sorted by genre. I do like the stark difference between Gospel’s fixation on hands, eyes and faces, and Hip-Hop’s concerns that are of a more carnal nature. There are some slightly NSFW pictures, but it’s all very tasteful (not to mention discrete). [With appreciative nod to Waxy.org .]

History is a continuing dialogue between the present and the past

I was having a fiddle on teh Internets the other evening, and I happened upon a website project that I thought that I would share with everyone. The project is Picture Australia and it is connected to the National Library of Australia . It has only been up for a little while, so I am sure that it will only get better. The point of the project is to Re-Picture Australia . This essentially means that the site itself allows ready access to public domain images from participants, ready for people to download, mash-up and reload with new meaning into Picture Australia via a Flickr group . I’ll quote from the media release to give you the general idea: The aim of the project is to encourage the creative use of the nation’s collections and attracting new audiences who play and work in the visual industries. We are encouraging image-makers to creatively reuse, reinterpret and ‘Re-Picture’. Picture curators from libraries, archives, galleries, and museums from around the country have provided ...

A LOLHenry for the new generation

I must admit to not being a huge fan of the whole LOLcat phenomenon . The pedant in me has a tendency to get frustrated with the (deliberate, I hope) poor spelling and grammar. Of course, I have little time for textspeak or leetspeak or any such nonsense. Yes, I do understand that it is simply a new way of interacting and a genuine 'voice' of a subculture, I just happen to think that it is stupid, and makes the people who use it look stupid. Hence the LOLHenry that I created the other day, and have posted today. Aside from an inevitable dumbing down of the language (and the standard mode of communication itself), I resent that most LOLCats make felines look like a bunch of ignorant morons. As a unabashed fan of the feline (and apologies to any relatives of Phil Jaques reading this), I feel that the sort of simplistic, inane and poorly constructed nonsense most LOLCat discourse resembles is far more suited to dogs. The canine is infinitely more likely to speak in such a crude...

Ads that I like #43

I will tastefully avoid mentioning the child pornography in the background of today’s advertisement from less enlightened times, and focus on the young lovely in front. Now, yes she looks do happy and gay, not a care in the world. No doubt, this is because she believes the Coppertone promise that “a special ingredient” helps keep the skin looking young while you get a deep, satisfying tan. Forgive me for thinking that this “special ingredient” is probably ‘naivety’, but I thought that I would utilise this wonderful resource that is the Internet and locate the young lady today. This being the Internet, all I needed to do was enter the appropriate coordinates and dates, and ZAPPO, there she is in all of her glory!

Shut up and Google it!

If – like me – you are tired of having to answer inconsequential and time-consuming questions, here is a website that you can now direct people to . [Small gesture of thanks in the direction of clusterflock .]

Why calling out misogyny matters (link)

I posted a few days ago some thoughts that I'd had about the noticeable sexism that can be found in the US Presidential pre-selection process. Without wanted to rehash it, I've been equally parts bemused, angered and depressed by some of my experiences online. Indeed, I've had a number of 'unpleasant' interactions in attempting to flag some of the inappropriate (read: sexist) attacks and assumptions on Clinton, or at least in trying to get people to at least self-identify that maybe some things should be 'out of bounds' in campaigning (like the t-shirt identifying Clinton as a prostitute). Generally speaking though, endeavouring to raise this doesn't seem to be provoking useful and thoughtful debate. I'd like to think that I tread warily in these matters, and attempt to promote a good discourse rather than go in too heavy handed (at least on someone else’s blog!). But it appears to be to no avail, responses generally start at "Don't be so s...

Still funny

Look I know that this is like, eight years late, but I only just saw this a couple of days ago, and I really think that it is the funniest thing I've seen in years, so I thought that I'd share. If you saw this one of the previous ten times that it circled teh internets, think of this as a pleasant reminder.
