If there is a God, atheism must seem to Him as less of an insult than religion.

Faith. St George's Church of the Martyr, Battery Point. September 2012. Wordless Wednesday.

There is no error so monstrous that it fails to find defenders among the ablest men.

There really is never enough time in the day. As the time stamp on this post will attest, time is something in short supply of late! Yes, yes... Theme Thursday again, and as I walk into walk I can't help but think the sun glinting off the [no doubt solid gold ] cross atop St George's Anglican Church [did you know that churches have websites now?] in Battery Point is a SIGN from upon high. Just what that SIGN signifies, I'm not sure. I suspect that it involves time, or a donkey, or maybe some kind of immaculate conception. One thing that I do know however, is that I don't know. Not knowing is a kind of knowing. Perhaps that's the SIGN. Or significance. I'll get my coat...

When grown people speak of the innocence of children, they don't really know what they mean.

Here, Ezra displays his fine impersonation of a fire and brimstone Southern Baptist minister. Christ came to me last night... [HALLELUJAH!] ... and He said unto me... [HALLELUJAH BROTHER!] ... He said unto me... He said that NOW was the time... [HALLELUJAH!] ... NOW was the time brothers and sisters for more programs featuring baby animals on the television... [AMEN BROTHER!]

I may be wrong, but I'm never in doubt.

I am not a man of faith, but one must admire the local Anglican hierarchy for renting out a building right next to their local HQ (pictured above) to a nightclub that features events like "topless pool" and the Tasmanian leg of the "Miss Nude Australia Quest". It's that sort of thinking that will once again locate the church at the centre of people's lives! It also represents an excellent example of value adding. You get the rent accrued through reckless debauchery , then hit the punters' guilt over all that filthy and wicked sin . Everybody wins. Next up: wet t-shirt contests in the Holy font!

Now, you listen here: 'e's not the Messiah, 'e's a very naughty boy! Now, go away!

I asked Jen to pick the image for today, and she opted for the "stone wall". Of course, this is no stone wall viewed from below, it's the water in Sullivan's Cove viewed from above! I took this one just next to the tilt bridge near the fish punts. That must read very oddly to a non-English speaker, one would imagine. Easter Monday, and I have still managed to avoid chocolate eggs. It will be quite an accomplishment if I make it right way through unscathed. I noted in the comments thread about a work colleague of a reader who was offended by my bemusement at the whole Easter tale. Now, I respect everybody's right to be offended at whatever they like, but like that Jesus fellow apparently said himself, do unto others and all that jazz. You see, I can happily endorse that Byrds track Jesus Is Just Alright , because Jesus sounded like a nice fellow. I can't say that there is too much different about our respective approaches to life. So, in the spirit of Jesus,...

A lot of Christians wear crosses around their necks; do you think if Jesus comes back he ever wants to see another cross?

Here is a special Good Friday good sunrise over the Derwent looking east. So it is Good Friday again. I love Good Friday. You have to wonder what old Jesus was thinking when he got up that morning. Did he think that he was going to have a good Friday? Was he disappointed? I would be. I have been explaining the concept of Easter to Henry. "There was this guy, and some chickens, and some rabbits. There was some argument about something. I think that it was over chocolate. And eggs. This guy's father wasn't happy. It had something to do with fish as well. Chocolate fish eggs maybe. Anyway, the rabbit eventually must have won and this chicken got nailed to this guy. His father wanted to prove a point. Because he sinned. Or something. The father sounded like a bit of an arse actually. Nailed them to a cross I think. Something like that. So we eat chocolate eggs delivered by rabbits in bonnets and there's nothing good on TV." I don't understand it either.

The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.

It requires no profound insight to see that many people exhibit a tendency that confuses (or conflates) the concepts of morality and faith. Obviously, as a dude who is candid and impenitent about his atheistic outlook on life – yet still endeavours to conduct himself in a professional and (more importantly) ethical manner – it seems rather obvious to me that one does not need religious faith to lead a righteous and healthy life. Similarly, simply assuming religious faith on its own does in no way mean that someone is ethically sound (in fact, it often means quite the opposite). That said – and I’ll be frank with you (and howya goin’ Frank?) – I am aware that I can be a cold and callous bastard and have high demands on people, I know that. Sometimes it takes a nice bit of graffiti to soften my marble-like disposition . So, after seeing this amiable request (and I read it as a request) neatly drawn on the entrance to the ALP HQ on my way to work this morning, I vowed to try and ...

In the Beginning, the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move

Here is Australia's next top supermodel in action, playing on a wooden fort with a pink pram! The pram is an effective rouse to smuggle as many balls as possible to the throw at anyone silly enough to approach the fort. Plus, the chicks kind of dig the kind of sensitive, new age man who is happy to be seen marching back and forth with a pink pram. Unsatisfied with my previous post, FF has asked what it is precisely that makes me uncomfortable about young people embracing the love of Jesus with the sort of verve and vigour normally associated with a cat on heat. Well, I'm not sure if there is a precise reason. Perhaps it just all seems unnatural to me. Someone at death's door I can imagine it, you're hedging your bets, I can understand the logic to that. Some profound trauma? Yeah, the world loses it's bearings, religion can give you a foundation that'll get you through, I see that. Some hot young thang with legs up to here and an arse just thinking about that...

Maybe poetry IS dead:Number three in a series

Here we go again, another quick one, this time from November 1998. This poem is a little heavy handed in the symbolism department, but I like it nonetheless. It rather depresses me that I play the 'homoerotic' card to shock (give that I don't find it all that shocking); but I figured that religious iconography, homoerotism and prostitution all add up to something offensive to someone out there. Forgive me, I was young... Last night i met Jesus no time ago. walking the wall “Jesus!” i cried. (inside) mine eyes fell down trouser level (the glory!) Christ stood still watching my every move.

Is this why they bumped him off?

Given that it's Easter and all, I figured that I'd get into the spirit and publish a post with a religious message. I am a big fan of See Mike Draw since I first saw the site, oh it must be a week now. Anyway, do yourself a favour and check out his site. They're all very funny, albeit in a slightly twisted way.
