In the misfortunes of our best friends we always find something not altogether displeasing to us.

Conspiracies abound. The Intercity Cycleway, just south of the Tasman Bridge. December 2012. Theme Thursday today has me musing on the tendency for people to look for the RHYTHM of things. The currents that explain life. They find cadences, intervals and melodies in way that things work (or don't work). Ultimately, in this disordered world I'm never ceased to be surprised by the ceaseless desire that many have for find order, explanations or RHYTHM to the flows of history and events. To be sure, it's usually some combination of a profound lack of intelligence or a missing reflective capacity to understand or interpret things. Or indeed it can be the (more dangerous, to my mind) product of both misguided and excessive educations. It's the only explanation that I have for the common feature of conspiracy theories, shadowy explanations or totalising, panoptic ideological theories behind the (quite simple really) messed up and confused nature of reality. Basically...

It does not prove a thing to be right because the majority say it is so.

Can you believe that Jen lost to these two jokers?

Self-pity is our worst enemy and if we yield to it, we can never do anything wise in this world.

Christmas Day meant a new scooter for Ezra.

a monotone with a name, as place / it is an aspect of human spirit

Railyard rabbit. Seen on the Intercity Cycleway, Hobart. December 2012. Do you know that I have seen eight ( 8! ) separate rabbits across Hobart in the past two weeks? Why, they almost breeding like... RABBITS! Colville , Kendrick Smithyman That sort of place where you stop long enough to fill the tank, buy plums, perhaps, and an icecream thing on a stick while somebody local comes in, leans on the counter, takes a good look but does not like what he sees of you, intangible as menace, a monotone with a name, as place it is an aspect of human spirit (by which shaped), mean, wind-worn. Face outwards, over the saltings: with what merit the bay, wise as contrition, shallow as their hold on small repute, good for dragging nets which men are doing through channels, disproportionate in the blaze of hot afternoon’s down-going to a far fire-hard tide’s rise upon the vague where time is distance? It could be plainly simple pleasure, but these have another tone or qual...

We should often blush for our very best actions, if the world did but see all the motives upon which they were done.

Waiting for something to happen. Intercity Cycleway, Cornelian Bay. October 2012. More questions, this time Sunday Stealing's Who Are you? Part 2–The Grown Up Meme ! Would you survive in prison? I'm quite certain that I wouldn't enjoy it very much, but I am aware of the odd trick to keep up appearances and pass the time. Will you keep your last name when you get married? I already did! When you look into the past, what do you miss most? Youth! Do you feel like you’ve lived this day a hundred times before? I think I have! Do you wear your shoes in the house? Only very rarely. I'm a bare feet kind of fellow. Happiness is a ________? Delusion. If anyone came to your house on your "lazy days" what would ya'll do? Bolt the door and hide. What are you naturally good at? Soliloquising. What irritates you most on the internet? The incivility of many. What is worth the pain? Bone marrow transplants (if needed). Transplanting marrow ...

If we are to judge of love by its consequences, it more nearly resembles hatred than friendship.

Little flower. Intercity cycleway, Cornelian Bay. October 2012. A little late, but this Theme Thursday I thought that I'd share a recipe for a very special SOUP! 1 tbl ambition 1 large optimism , coarsely chopped 2 cloves of potential , crushed 2 tsp finely grated competence 2 tsp ground resilience 500 g bitter experience , peeled, coarsely chopped 4 large milestones , peeled and diced 4 cups water 1 tsp resentment 1/2 cup low-fat natural cynicism Chopped fresh circumstances , to serve Step 1 Heat a large saucepan over medium heat. Drizzle ambition. Add the optimism and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until soft. Add the potential, competence and resilience. Cook, stirring, for 1-2 minutes or until aromatic. Step 2 Add the bitter experience, milestones, water and resentment. Increase heat to high. Bring to the boil. Cover and reduce heat to low. Cook for 15-20 minutes or until the ingredients are soft. Set aside to cool slightly. Step 3 Place ...

In order that all men may be taught to speak the truth, it is necessary that all likewise should learn to hear it.

A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both.

Tracks leading north. Hobart Freight Terminal, Mcvilly Drive. October 2012. As you know, the Internet is a wonderful place filled with the rich and varied treasures of the world holds (and no doubt some other stuff too.) The following are some things that I've had a look at in the last week. I call this: a Compendium of Click-throughs for Monday Morning... The Comedian's Comedian Podcast . Well worth a listen if you're interested in the craft... We often ask why some people choose to resist authoritarian regimes. But the better question might be why so many decide to cooperate . Misogyny in history: War on Women, Waged in Postcards: Memes From the Suffragist Era ... A good read on architectural fixations... The BBC asks Condoms: Why are we still embarrassed about using them? My theory is that it is the implication of an admission that you are still going to be putting something somewhere *you don't quite trust* (or vice versa) even though you *don't q...

A great social success is a pretty girl who plays her cards as carefully as if she were plain.

A fence near a bridge. The Intercity Cycleway, near Tasman Bridge. January 2012. The Internet is a wonderful place filled with the rich and varied treasures of the world holds (as well as some dodgy politics.) The following are some things that I've had a look at in the last week. I call this: a Compendium of Click-throughs for Monday Morning.. A wonderful collection of London’s top brutalist buildings … A discussion of one of the World’s most respected (but oft preposterous) awards, the Nobel Peace Prize … How might one go about raising a baby using science ? Personally, I think that it is more of an art form… I love an eviscerating art review . Even better, it’s about one of my pet loathes: the odious Damien Hirst! The answer to the question that we all have been asking: How the Chicken Conquered the World! On matters most fowl… Portraits of chickens dressed like Napoleon, Einstein and other historical figures… On the importance of questions… Given their sign...
