How people treat you is their karma; how you react is yours.

Alien landing? Elizabeth Street Pier, Hobart waterfront. June 2013. Sunday Stealing: The "What's Your Story" Meme 1. What is the strangest thing you have ever eaten in public? Probably a witchetty grub . 2. If you had to go on an adventure, with elves, dwarves, or hobbits, who would you take and why? A rogue band of brigand trolls. 3. You are at a rural retreat lodge somewhere deep in Wisconsin or Canada. You are approached by a taxidermist who hands you a stuffed badger and asks you to put it in your lap. What do you do next? Say, "Yeah, cheers for that." 4. If you were given biscotti, would you prefer it with coffee, tea, or hot chocolate? Awkwardly apologise for not eating it because of an allergy to almonds. 5. In your opinion, who is the funniest man or woman alive today At the moment? I like Louis C.K. and Stewart Lee. 6. If you were given thirty seconds on television to say something, what would it be? Hope is the thing...

The real end of summer. Hobart as seen from Little Howrah Beach. March 2012. People who find breastfeeding offensive are idiots. Hope is the thing... , Emily Dickinson Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul, And sings the tune without the words, And never stops at all, And sweetest in the gale is heard; And sore must be the storm That could abash the little bird That kept so many warm. I've heard it in the chillest land, And on the strangest sea; Yet, never, in extremity, It asked a crumb of me.

A lie would have no sense unless the truth were felt dangerous.

The morning sun over Storm Bay. Calverts Beach, South Arm Peninsula. January 2012. Watery Wednesday today and we celebrate with a Watery Wednesday today and we celebrate with a shot of the lovely (slow rising) morning sun over the water as it starts to burn off the cloud. This one was taken down at Calverts Beach, and you can see Storm Bay out to the south of South Arm Peninsula. I understand that it got its name when Abel Tasman was forced by a storm to take his ships out to sea before they could anchor back in 1642. No storms on this morning though!

Meanings are not determined by situations, but we determine ourselves by the meanings we give to situations.

The day that Henry went all Syd Barrett on us.

Experiments at night (with pants) # 1. Constitution Dock, Hobart. June 2011. A: “This is a sorry sight.” B: “A foolish thought, to say a sorry sight.” A: “There's one did laugh in 's sleep, and one cried, ‘Murther!’ That they did wake each other. I stood and heard them; But they did say their prayers, and address'd them Again to sleep.” Now we break for a poem... Tonight , Elfriede Jelinek tonight my sparrows let go the snow into fields of carnations swollen with anger. tonight the three popes proclaim the revolution against teenage television. seals smash their heads bloody their heads on the elevators the paternoster elevators which delays the holding of their conference. tonight my sister the wind's bride gives blood for the cello of the jericho desert which prompts the trombones ...

Every people have gods to suit their circumstances.

Shutter speed slowed right down, with a twirl. Elizabeth Street Pier, June 2011. City lights. Street lights. Road signs. Cars cars cars. I rarely get the chance to muck about with the camera, but like to have a fiddle every now and then. I like to imagine that this one is really some kind of intergalactic speedway featuring all manner of Martians, Venusians, Mercurians, Uranuses and heaven knows who else ripped to the gills on membrosia and overtaken by a lust for competition. As always, it would end in tears and no little bloodshed.

Arriving at one goal is the starting point to another.

Flower near the beach. Seven Mile Beach. April 2011. Consider yesterday's mission a success. Next stop, Glenorchy ...

Think like a man of action, and act like a man of thought.

A silver sheen in the morning. Eaglehawk Neck, January 2011. Sunday Top Five again and this week is an easy top five. Five Things That I Will Do Before F%$&*#G Jetstar Ever Get Another Cent Out Of Me ! Attend Mass. Gender realignment surgery. Door to door sales. Try out for the Dallas Cowgirls. Praise Jetstar.

To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly.

The boy in the bubble just got bigger, twenty three millimetres in three weeks, to be precise. If he continues growing at this rate, I calculate that he will stand TWENTY FOUR METRES TALL by the age of fifty.

The truth has never been of any real value to any human being - it is a symbol for mathematicians and philosophers to pursue.

The park isn't all fun and games. Sometimes we go there and ponder our own mortality.

Action indeed is the sole medium of expression for ethics.

Clifton Beach is one of my favourite Tasmanian beaches. Sure, it can get rough and tumble out there, but that’s the fun of the beach! The beach itself faces south-southeast into Storm Bay and is exposed to all southerly swell. Waves average around the 1.5-metre mark, but complicating matters is a continuous bar which is cut by rips every 200 metres during and following high waves. Even better, there are permanent rips against the rocks at each end. All of this means that many consider Clifton Beach as the most dangerous beach in Tasmania. Henry here is not so sure. He wagers that there are not enough Great Whites for that title.

Many a man fails as an original thinker simply because his memory it too good.

Afternoon sun over Geilston Bay (as seen through a gum). East Derwent Highway, Geilston Bay. October 2010. I think that I forgot to post. Oops. Can you tell that I've been busy?

Knowledge rests not upon truth alone, but upon error also.

Late afternoon and vampires start circling Royal Hobart Hospital. August 2010. Today already feels like a living version of the first joint-authored treatise of Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx. A Critique of Critical Criticism . Indeed, supplementing the first draft of my critique of critical criticism will be much sweary-language and quiet groaning. I’m in pain.

their confusion is constant

Self-portrait with Ezra in the late afternoon. Bellerive, March 2010. I can't deny it, both my sons and I have very long legs . The late afternoon autumn sun demonstrates this most effectively. For The Foxes , Charles Bukowski don't feel sorry for me. I am a competent, satisfied human being. be sorry for the others who fidget complain who constantly rearrange their lives like furniture. juggling mates and attitudes their confusion is constant and it will touch whoever they deal with. beware of them: one of their key words is "love." and beware those who only take instructions from their God for they have failed completely to live their own lives. don't feel sorry for me because I am alone for even at the most terrible moments humor is my companion. Civilization is unbearable, but it is less unbearable at the top.

Night time is the right time for a burst water main in Geilston Bay. May, 2010. Man, I had written a whole LONG and CONVOLUTED post about today's list, and the damn computer ate it! God damn broken my heart. I'm just gonna list it and wipe the tears away and pass on typing it all up again. Bugger. Time for the Sunday Top Five . Music again! A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both.

Two blokes having a look under the bonnet. Salamanca, May 2010. Sorry I'm late but I'm busy, so will be brief. Theme Thursday ? Bugger! WHITE? WHITE is one of those words that doesn't say much, but kind of says everything. For most people, the opposite of WHITE is BLACK. For just as many, the absence of BLACK is WHITE. It seems that BLACK somehow sullies WHITE. Conversely, WHITE somehow enriches and improves BLACK. WHITE makes BLACK a little less menacing. That seems stupid to me. WHITE is WHITE, BLACK IS BLACK and BLACK is WHITE and WHITE is BLACK.

My formula for living is quite simple. I get up in the morning and I go to bed at night. In between, I occupy myself as best I can.

Late Autumn out in front of Parliament Lawns. May 2010 Now that it is Winter I am missing the morning's Autumn light. It makes me glum, gloomy, melancholy, miserable, disconsolate and even a little bit discombobulated. It's a good thing that large and loud machinery sparks me up! Leaves in the gutter can be a bugger. May 2010.

A conqueror is always a lover of peace.

The view north from Salmanca Place in the evening, rendered as a 1980s synth-pop album inner sleeve. May 2010. Theme Thursday and I'm in a rush! What a surprise. WRINKLE. Hmmmm. Wrin·kle. Noun . (rngkl) Hmmmm. "1. A small furrow, ridge, or crease on a normally smooth surface, caused by crumpling, folding, or shrinking." Hmmmm. No . "2. A line or crease in the skin, as from age." No . "3. A clever trick, method, or device, especially one that is new and different." Closer . Far closer. "4. A problem or imperfection; a fault." GOT IT! Combine four and three and I can link today's theme with the photo chosen randomly last week. An unsteady hand, low levels of light and an unpredictable bus schedule lead to a series of photographs that exhibited a WRINKLE (that is, WRINKLE as outlined in definition four ). My WRINKLE (see definition three ), was to utilise mediocre significant PhotoShop skills and render said presentable image through a...

Love is the triumph of imagination over intelligence.

Morning is breaking over Flagstaff Gully. Geilston Bay. May 2010. This was not taken this morning. This morning you would be lucky to see the hand in front of your face; fog as thick as pea soup! All the better to be having day two off from work, this time recovering from the dreaded gastro.

Platitude: an idea (a) that is admitted to be true by everyone, and (b) that is not true.

Autumn on Parliament Lawns. May 2010. I know that it is Autumn, but it is feeling more like winter. I must have taken this one in the first week of May, as these trees are nearly nude now. It's kind of sexy, only the cold takes the edge off the excitement...
