The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don't want, drink what you don't like, and do what you'd rather not.

Going home. Harrington Street, Hobart CBD. June 2012. That's right, time for today's Sunday Top Five Ten . This week, The Top Five TEN Spices That Get The Most Regular Workout In My Kitchen Over The Past Six Months! Salt Garlic Pepper Cinnamon Paprika Cayenne pepper Ginger Cloves Wasabi [Lemon] Zest

It is a fair summary of history to say that the safeguards of liberty have been forged in controversies involving not very nice people.

Heading home. Harrington Street, as viewed from Sandy Bay Road, Sandy Bay. July 2011. Sunday Top Five and what could be finer that Five Of The Best Henry And Ezra Brotherly Love Photographs That Have Appeared On This Very Blog! Easter Picnic in the gardens! Look both ways! It's all in the eyes! Pirate training or iron man training? Does it matter? Two old hams putting on a show at Eaglehawk Neck! Just missing the cut? Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow... , Ezra shows Henry the ways of life in the big city , Scooter break! , and Beach beefcake!

Many people would sooner die than think; in fact, they do so.

Ampelmännchen, Ich werde auf dich warten. Campbell Straße, December 2010. The Christmas/New Year period has derailed my reading somewhat. Who knew that so much literary graft could be achieved on public transport and during lunch breaks through the week? That said, I'm knee deep in Gert Hofmann's Luck , and should be finished in a few days. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. I think that much will depend on where he takes the tale...

Either life entails courage, or it ceases to be life.

I am once again reminded of something the world's most famous Jewish Cowboy - Kinky Friedman - said in a book once: Friday night was the night most people thought they were supposed to have fun. Trouble was most people didn't know what fun was or how to have it, so things usually ended up pretty ugly. To be honest, a parking sign in the river is a reasonable result if it's the worst thing to come from thousands upon thousands of pissed idiots that descend on the waterfront at this time of year. Trouble is, it is rarely the worst.

Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them. With Major Major it had been all three.

Theme Thursday again, and we're talking TRAFFIC. This set of signs down near the waterfront never ceases to amuse me. Some might speculate that the two people in the yellow sign are merely attempting to inform oncoming TRAFFIC to be aware of the likelihood of people crossing the road. However, I rather think of them fleeing (yes fleeing ) the aforementioned toilets . Look at the barely controlled aggression the the larger , much older , male of the pair. The dominance of his action is almost palpable. Oh yes, he's a wrong 'un all right. Now look at her . The cowering subservience. The timidity of a girl who has been kicked in the guts by life, only to meet a fellow who helps her out, tells her that he loves her, only to kick her in the guts again. What happened in those toilets is what I want to know. What crack the fine veneer of the older suitor's façade? What prompted this scene? An unwanted child? A run in with the law? A stray, seemingly innocuous text message f...

An original idea. That can't be too hard. The library must be full of them.

Look at these poor buggers waiting at the lights, ready to head in to work for another day of soul destroying, mind numbing, blood pressure raising work! And it doesn't even matter that these guys will be working in the waterfront precinct, with lovely views and the chance of seeing seals frolicking during their coffee break. It matters not one jot, because they are disenchanted through the crushing numbness that is paid employment in the year 2009. One that fine note, here's Tuesday Q and A! This is an easy one today: do you hate your job?

A learned blockhead is a greater blockhead than an ignorant one.

I've featured a lot of pictures looking north on Elizabeth Street, but from memory this is one of the few taken looking south. This was taken on Thursday, at around 4:30 pm, as I am grumpy waiting for the 4:20 express. Sunday Top Five! A wisp of melancholy and an intense feeling of being old accompanied my oversight of a "best singles on the past decade" list online yesterday evening. More precisely, I either failed to recognise, or flippantly dismissed most of the entries. You see, my formative musical years happened some time prior to the year 2000. Thus, today's list. In chronological order, I present to you My Five Favourite Record Albums of the 1990s ! U2: Achtung Baby R.E.M.: Automatic for the People Pulp: Different Class Radiohead: OK Computer Wilco: Summerteeth Just missing the cut were a long list, culled to a very short list that included: Manic Street Preachers' The Holy Bible ; Portishead's Dummy ; Guided by Voices' Alien Lanes ; Pavement...

(My) photo of the day

I took today's photo this afternoon as I was walking from work into the city. I was pretty much snapping away at anything and figured that something would turn out halfway decent. This is generally my approach, and a damn sight easier with digital than when you had to develop the film, and then get into a darkroom fiddling about for hours on end. Great fun at times, for sure, but time consuming and expensive! The older bloke on the left doesn't look too sure about something. I'm not too sure whether it was me taking his photo, or his chances of beating the traffic behind him. I don't know why he's so worried though, he's in pole position!

Photo(s) of the day

Here are a couple of pics to give all motorists the willies. Described as the 'classic traffic jam', this took place on the Moscow Sadovoye Koltzo [ring road] in October 2007. Here it is in the morning: Here is is that afternoon: And here they are, still milling about into the night: Dark Roasted Blend have posted this morning these pictures, and a wide selection of the world’s most torturous traffic conundrums that is well worth a visit .
