A man can fail many times, but he isn't a failure until he begins to blame somebody else.

Here comes the sun. Sullivans Cove, Hobart. June 2013. Sunday Top Five ? Crabs, Beautiful Crabs! Mr Krabs Portunus pelagicus Scylla serrata Ranina ranina Pseudocarcinus gigas

Most of us have only two or three genuinely interesting moments in our lives; the rest is filler.

Fog on the eastern shore. Sullivans Cove, Hobart. June 2013. More stealing from Sunday Stealing. This week, The Wish List Meme, part one 1.) What are 3 things on your Wish list and why? i) infinite berries; ii) an inability to feel cold; and, iii) a bit of peace and quiet. 2.) What do you miss about your childhood? The quiet. The time. The lack of responsibility. 3.) What do you do on your spare time on the weekends? Spare time on weekends? You mean between the cooking, cleaning, putting washing out, getting washing in and putting washing away? We usually go for a walk or a swim. 4.) What do you appreciate most in your life? Two healthy and happy little boys. 5.) Would you rather be rich or healthy? Can't I have both? If not, what's the point in cash if you're at death's door? 6.) If you could go back in time would you and why? To stay for good or just a visit? I wouldn't mind a visit every now and again. As a keen student of histo...

Most of what we call management consists of making it difficult for people to get their work done.

Ship at rest in Winter, full moon behind clouds. Princes Wharf No. 1, Sullivans Cove. June 2013. Wordless Wednesday.

It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right.

Rope. Sullivans Cove, Hobart. June 2013. Sunday Top Five ? Of course. Here, have my Top Five Records By Paul McCartney After He Left That Band That He Was In Before He Was In Wings! Maybe I'm Amazed , Paul McCartney Let Me Roll It , Paul McCartney & Wings Jet , Paul McCartney & Wings Mull of Kintyre , Wings Coming Up , Paul McCartney.

How people treat you is their karma; how you react is yours.

Alien landing? Elizabeth Street Pier, Hobart waterfront. June 2013. Sunday Stealing: The "What's Your Story" Meme 1. What is the strangest thing you have ever eaten in public? Probably a witchetty grub . 2. If you had to go on an adventure, with elves, dwarves, or hobbits, who would you take and why? A rogue band of brigand trolls. 3. You are at a rural retreat lodge somewhere deep in Wisconsin or Canada. You are approached by a taxidermist who hands you a stuffed badger and asks you to put it in your lap. What do you do next? Say, "Yeah, cheers for that." 4. If you were given biscotti, would you prefer it with coffee, tea, or hot chocolate? Awkwardly apologise for not eating it because of an allergy to almonds. 5. In your opinion, who is the funniest man or woman alive today At the moment? I like Louis C.K. and Stewart Lee. 6. If you were given thirty seconds on television to say something, what would it be? "Stop wasti...

He was like a cock who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow.

Walking to work. Murray Street, looking out over Sullivans Cove. March 2013. Wordless Wednesday.

Nothing recedes like progress.

Surface. Hobart waterfront, Sullivans Cove. February 2013. Wordless Wednesday.

Writing free verse is like playing tennis with the net down.

Wind on the water. Sullivans Cove, Hobart. July 2012. High Rise by J.G. Ballard: a dystopian vision of modern life (written in the 1970s), featuring a stark urban landscape and exploring the ways in which technology can warp the human psyche in all sorts of perverted and nasty ways. Think Hobbes' State of Nature in an apartment block. Ho hum. C- . The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells: a dystopian vision of modern life (written in the 1890s). The tale of a shipwrecked fellow 'rescued' by a pair of exiled scientists endeavouring to create sentient beings from animals. Really though, the book is about God, pain and cruelty, moral responsibility, human identity and the consequences of human interference with nature. Terrifying stuff! A- . Cards on the Table by Agatha Christie: convoluted little mystery. The setup? Wealthy eccentric invites four sleuths and four (suspected) to a dinner party and game of bridge. To no-one's surprise the eccentric dandy cops a kn...

Creativity is the sudden cessation of stupidity.

Boat. Sullivan's Cove, Hobart Waterfront. May 2012. Two books this week, perhaps best read as a pair. First up is 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff. A publishing sensation, this is a collection of letters shared between a little-known, middle-aged American writer and the staff of Marks & Co, an antiquarian bookshop in London over two decades – from Britain’s post-war austerity to the Swinging Sixties. As such, it is an interesting document of the special relationships that can develop over a love of books. Slight, but charming. Recommended. Second up is the companion piece, Duchess of Bloomsbury Street . Essentially the diary of Hanff's first trip to London after the success of the first book,it catalogues her meeting a cast of characters the book has thrown into her life. While it's an enjoyable experience to see the effect of unexpected literary success, I found Hanff herself a reasonably annoying protagonist. Only for those who really need the closure...

The difficulty is to try and teach the multitude that something can be true and untrue at the same time.

I shall try not too. Elizabeth Street Pier, Sullivan's Cove. November 2011. It's Tuesday right? That means another Q and A stolen from Sunday Stealing. This week, The Madness Meme, Part 2 [the madness continues]. 23. Do you ever walk around the house naked? All the time. It’s my house! 24. If you were an animal what would you be? Why? Erm... I’m pretty sure that I am an animal. Humans can get mighty uppity sometimes about their position in the food chain. If the question was intended to be “If you were a different kind of animal what would you be? Why?”, I guess that I’d say Great White Shark. Why? I dunno. Cruising around. Easting stuff. Sounds cool. 25. Hair colour you like on someone you’re dating? These things are always going on about ‘dating’. I don’t even know what that means! Is it a euphemism for ‘rooting’? Anyway, I like brown hair on girls. 26. If suffering an injury, would you rather be left blind or deaf? I really rather not suffer the injury, but if you have a h...

A kindersher saichel iz oichet a saichel.

Running is a means of terrestrial locomotion allowing humans and other animals to move rapidly on foot. Here Henry demonstrates the appropriate gait one might use when escaping a rogue shark or crocodile that strikes as you inspect boats in a marina. Well done Henry!

Let others have the privacy of touching words

The Hobart Waterfront! First time in a while... March 2011. Here's a sight that used to feature more prominantly on this here blog. It's the one thing that I miss from the last place that I used to work. On that note, the combination of fixed term contract with a few months left to run and the present uncertainly of a State government vacancy control program means that yet again I am open to offers regarding work. Anyone out there who needs an all around genius-at-large, let me know! A Conceit , by Maya Angelou Give me your hand Make room for me to lead and follow you beyond this rage of poetry. Let others have the privacy of touching words and love of loss of love. For me Give me your hand.

Do not be in a hurry to succeed. What would you have to live for afterwards? Better make the horizon your goal; it will always be ahead of you.

I see sea green. Bellerive Wharf, February 2011. Any questions? If someone wrote a book about your life, what would they title it? Good question. Hmmm. How about Mental Disintegration: the challenge and art of cohabiting with two tyros ? Do you like to sing in the shower? Yes I do. I sing tunes from the hit parade re-worked with dirty lyrics. What do you do when (you think) no one is looking? I look. Did you ever have a teacher who picked on you? At least one for certain. She was a sour old cow. The others, well, maybe they had a point… Describe yourself in a single sentence. I fall down a lot.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.

A plane, you reckon…? As ever, Ezra remains unconvinced .

It is impossible to persuade a man who does not disagree, but smiles.

Ezra’s first upskirt upshorts pic!

When we see persons of worth, we should think of equaling them; when we see persons of a contrary character, we should examine ourselves.

Henry has his heart set on his very own yacht. It might take a while, mate… If you were to own a yacht, where might you sail?

We must make up our minds to be ignorant of much, if we would know anything.

Keep your eyes’ peeled people, there be sharks out there… I can smell ‘em!

as when he was and didn't know he was a child

A bit of an early morning paddle. Sullivans Cove, June 2010. Finishing up all of my old stock footage here. The Shed in the background there now has a whizz bang new roof! One must be brief today, as in a mere few hours, we shall be celebrating my darling Henry's FOURTH birthday. Oh Henry, how we love thee! CESAR VALLEJO , Luis Benitez Walking along the corridors of imagination, free and alone forever, as when he was and didn't know he was a child, until forgetting that I'm imagining. That this heavy flesh, that urinates and sweats, be resumed in one or two ideas or comes right back, to that almost nothing that sees almost nothing in its cloudy sky. Send me back to the chimpanzee or make me only literature, but do not retain in me the condition of man. What weighs everything within me in the outside has no weight.

People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Resting for Autumn. Sullivans Cove, May 2010. Once again, an anti-Antipodean decree has confirmed those of us down here at the arse-end of the world second nay, eighth -class citizens! To “celebrate” the one-hundredth posting of the Theme Thursday meme, the Theme Thursday junta have offered the diktat that the topic for the Theme will only appear on Thursday, at 6:00 a.m. Eastern United States Time. For those in the know, 6 am eating bagels in New York means 8 pm in Hobart bathing children! Given that I have established an 8:30 am/8 pm dynamic of general shot/Henry and Ezra shot, the new format does not really work for me . Hence, today I share with you my decision to declare throw off the yoke of Yankee imperialism and declare my independence! Yes people, today I choose my own destiny through selecting my own Theme Thursday topic. Today I have a doozy: POTAMOPHILOUS . Yes, I very much fit the profile of a POTAMOPHILOUS -type, as all of you will no doubt already know by the sheer am...

I, too, am America.

These are not bullet holes. Pier One, Sullivans Cove. May 2010. Often, it is not not looking that causes people to miss things; it’s not looking properly . I, Too, Sing America by Langston Hughes I, too, sing America. I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen When company comes, But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong. Tomorrow, I'll be at the table When company comes. Nobody'll dare Say to me, "Eat in the kitchen," Then. Besides, They'll see how beautiful I am And be ashamed-- I, too, am America.
