All nature wears one universal grin.

Kelp gull on wing. Derwent foreshore, Lindisfarne. August 2013. Wordless Wednesday.

Beyond a certain point, the whole universe becomes a continuous process of initiation.

Beautiful blossoms!

Skepticism must go hand in hand with rationality. When theories are shown to be false, the correct thing to do is to move on.

Walk on Henry. Walk on.

On the outskirts of every agony sits some observant fellow who points.

The darling buds of May #1. Derwent Avenue, Lindisfarne. May 2013. This Theme Thursday brings with it a MYSTERIOUS selection of philosophical musings from a seried of over-educated ignoramuses. The first asserts "I do not know what I am: I am not what I know." The second, "But if cattle and horses or lions had hands, or were able to draw with their hands and do the works that men can do, horses would draw the form of their gods like horses, and cattle like cattle, and they would make their gods' bodies resemble their own." The first retorts, "When the danger is so great that death has become the hope, then despair is the hopelessness of not being able to die." "Quite", I said. The darling buds of May #2. Derwent Avenue, Lindisfarne. May 2013.

If you can't beat them, arrange to have them beaten.

Sometimes the path less taken is less taken for a bloody good reason!

Take care of the sense, and the sounds will take care of themselves.

Ezra takes a little break as we stroll around Derwent Avenue into Lindisfarne. Thankfully, there was no frost that morning...

We cast a shadow on something wherever we stand.

Young love. It's complicated... Derwent Avenue, Lindisfarne. March 2012. Tuesday already? That means another Q and A stolen from Sunday Stealing! Today it is the The Last March Meme 1) Which TV character do you think you are most like? A heady mix of MacGyver, Al Swearengen and George Costanza. 2) What time do you go to bed? Early. These days I’m asleep from 9:30 pm to 10 pm each night. 3) What was the last meal you made from scratch? Dinner last night. A simple one though, sausages and a green salad with a Mexican tinge to it. I regularly cook, and prefer to do it from scratch. 4) What is your favourite type of music? This old chestnut again! I like all sorts of music, and my tastes are often dependent on my mood. I usually answer this one with “good music”. 5) In what position do you sleep? I usually sleep on my [right] side, facing the wall. 6) What is your first memory? I remember Kevin Bartlett’s last goal in the 1980 Grand Final, so with something to hang the memory off, I’d ...

The trouble ain't that there is too many fools, but that the lightning ain't distributed right.

Two fool-proof hiding places! Derwent Avenue walking path, Lindisfarne. March 2012. Bear with me for a MOMENT… Theme Thursday has come around and I am kind-of trapped in the MOMENT. You know what I mean, it happens now and again. A MOMENT slows down and it, well, not quite pauses but it floats . It lingers and it exists for much more than a mere MOMENT. For that MOMENT, everything stops. Sound stops. Movement stops and even though it probably isn’t really more than a MOMENT or even a fraction of a MOMENT, it feels real (really-real? Hyper-real?) for much, much more than a MOMENT. It’s like the first time that you decided that you were going to lean in and kiss her. You steel yourself and prepare yourself for the MOMENT. But it itself is a MOMENT and you don’t want to be lost in the MOMENT but the point of such a MOMENT is to get lost in the MOMENT. Are you following me?

There's one way to find out if a man is honest - ask him. If he says, "Yes," you know he is a crook.

See, sometimes he is happy!

(jesus/ told him ;he/ wouldn’t believe/ it)

A little bit of renovation. Derwent Avenue, Lindisfarne. March 2012. If e.e. cummings was building a house, I'm almost certain that he wouldn't waste time with nonsense like retaining walls, dynamic load testing, elemental cost planning and some such silly buggers! “plato told” , e.e. cummings plato told him :he couldn’t believe it(jesus told him ;he wouldn’t believe it)lao tsze certainly told him,and general (yes mam) sherman; and even (believe it or not)you told him :i told him ;we told him (he didn’t believe it,no sir)it took a nipponized bit of the old sixth avenue el ;in the top of his head :to tell him

My advice to you is not to inquire why or whither, but just enjoy your ice cream while it's on your plate.

Hen, Ez and Jen take in the view south west of Lindisfarne. Derwent Avenue walkway, Lindisfarne. January 2012. The Internet is a wonderful place filled with the rich and varied treasures of the world holds (as well as a LOT of crap.) The following are some things that I've had a look at in the last week. I call this: a Compendium of Click-throughs for Monday Morning... People who fly Australia Day flags on their cars tend to express more racist attitudes than others without flags 100 years of the war on drugs Hooked on chicken nuggets : Girl, 17, who has eaten nothing else since age TWO rushed to hospital after collapsing the world’s last quiet places

The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.

What's going on? Derwent Avenue, Lindisfarne. January 2012. Happy birthday Jen! You don't look a day over [please insert most appropriate age here] ! Implosions , Adrienne Rich The world's not wanton only wild and wavering I wanted to choose words that even you would have to be changed by Take the word of my pulse, loving and ordinary Send out your signals, hoist your dark scribbled flags but take my hand All wars are useless to the dead My hands are knotted in the rope and I cannot sound the bell My hands are frozen to the switch and I cannot throw it The foot is in the wheel When it's finished and we're lying in a stubble of blistered flowers eyes gaping, mouths staring dusted with crushed arterial blues I'll have done nothing even for you?

We can't all do everything.

Forward! I'm tipping Henry to lead North Korea into a peaceful and prosperous future! Well, that or a nuclear catastrophe...

If you'd take your head home and boil it for a turnip it might be useful. I can't say. But it might.

Heavy cloud cover in the east. St Johns Park, New Town. February 2011. Like the clouds hanging wearily over this tired old land, my year(s)-long commitment to drafting a Sunday Top Five looms over my head like the sword of Damocles. What can I catalogue today? What unspoken five might possibly emerge from the gloom? To fit the temper of the times, how about I share with you My Top Five Favourite Shades Of Blue ?
