(My) Photo of the day

I have decided to go with a two-for-one deal today, featuring clouds as seen from Geilston Bay. The first photograph was taken yesterday afternoon on the Derwent Avenue side of the East Derwent Highway. I snapped the second this morning on the Golf Links Road side of the Highway.

After a couple of weeks of very cold mornings, it was surprisingly mild today. Unfortunately, I had neglected to consider that the last 40 pages of my book consisted of footnotes, so I finished it before I had even boarded the bus. That left lots of window gazing. You have to understand, in Australia, no-one talks to each other on the bus unless you are already very well acquainted. I am deadly serious when I say that if I were to attempt to strike up a conversation with someone, their assumption would be a) pervert; b) mentally ill; or c) a mentally ill pervert.

Kris - for conversation try the Mt Nelson bus - it would take you a little bit out of your way but the views are good.

I actually think that is why I don't read as much these days...I don't need to catch public transport every day so I don't get the chance!! I miss it.
Funny thing...Cody now has to catch a lot of public transport as he works and goes to school in the CBD (and who could afford to park each day there...$40 per two hours is a bit rich!!) so he has actually started reading... something he only did if he had to at school! I guess it also helps that he works in at the State library as well and has access to their magnificent book collection!

Belated Happy Birthday! May God Bless you abundantly.

*May joy be the only reason for tears in your eyes in the coming year and always*

I feel the same when on buses or trains. I also get the same type of looks when walking around with my camera.

Maybe it's the route you're getting? Several times on the Taroona line I got stuck between the window and a Christian on a mission to convert me. I guess there could be a conversation there if you're so inclined. Hitch-hiking's more conversational, but then again I've also had the experience of trying to be converted by the driver. Maybe I just look wanton.
Two fabulous images. Quite moody intense colours. It is a misconception that living on an island, we are all friendly and chatter to each other on the bus. No chance. I have my head stuck in book with my ipod on. I agree if I spoke to the nearest person on the bus I would probably be sectioned for being sociable which is the trait of a nutter. I wouldn't mention I photographed a "painted lady" this week either. They might not realise I was refering to a butterfly.

Coach: I have taken the Mount Nelson bus, and will say that it is a better journey in the school holidays.

Sue: $40 for two hours parking, you can get a couple of parking tickets for two days and you're still in front down here!

Priyanka Khot: there maybe some tears come August, although last time it was just dust in the room, honestly!

Jim: it is funny how being friendly or just taking a picture can evoke hostility, but you can see a bunch of drunken idiots trashing a rubbish bin and no-one dares look! I think people have their priorities all wrong.

Abe: it's always nice to get a complement from a presidential namesake.

Blackie: I have heard too many hitching stories that climax with the driver 'accidently' falling out of hants to get me into it! I don't think I look Christian material, so strangers don't seem to try.

Babooshka: as long as the Ipod isn't blarring and defening everybody else, I'm fine with that.

Neva, some of my best friends are mentally ill perverts!

Greg, you're right, both sunrises and sunsets have been fantastic. I'm waiting for the cockatoos to return to get a snap of them.

Yes it is Theme Thusday again, and today we are talking GLASS . I've three possible hooks to hang my [glass] hat on with this theme. First, the photo! Yes, it is the river again from an odd angle in an interesting light. You can just make out the bottom, which should tell you that I'm right on the shore. In some ways, the distortion of the stones below the surface reminds me of ye olde glass windows, what they call "cylinder blown sheet glass". You can still find some of this around Hobart these days. Thw second link comes from a trip I took to Venice a few years back. You're probably aware that Venice was (is?) a glass-making centre of excellence. If you have ever been there and taken the tour of the glass factories, you might be familiar with the sheer amount of coloured glass that sits at the bottom of the water there. These fragments of glass have been worn down and had their edges dulled by their time in the water, which makes them ample keepsakes for the ...

Hold me now, oh hold me now, until this hour has gone around. And I'm gone on the rising tide, to face Van Dieman's Land

Theme Thursday again, and this one is rather easy. I am Tasmanian, you see, and aside from being all around general geniuses - as I have amply described previously - we are also very familiar with the concept of WATER. Tasmania is the ONLY island state of an ISLAND continent. That means, we're surrounded by WATER. That should help explain why I take so many photographs of water . Tasmania was for a long time the place where the British (an island race terrified of water) sent their poor people most vile and horrid criminals. The sort of folk who would face the stark choice of a death sentence , or transportation to the other end of the world. Their catalogue of crimes is horrifying : stealing bread assault stealing gentlemen's handkerchiefs drunken assault being poor affray ladies being overly friendly with gentlemen for money hitting people having a drink and a laugh public drunkenness being Irish Fenian terrorist activities being Catholic religious subversion. ...

Happy anniversary baby, got you on my mind

No it is not a webcam, but this photograph was taken a mere forty-five ago on my way in to work. Here you can see a good old fashioned Hobart autumn morning, with the rain pelting down and me getting drenched. This one was taken on the corner of Macquarie and Elizabeth, while I was waiting for the lights to change. Come on Ampelmännchen ! Today is my wedding anniversary, an apparently I need to be showering Jen with leather -related goodies. Va-va-vaVOOM! To you Jennifer, here is a poem I wrote this very morning. Anniversary I love you i love you iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou I LOVE you I love YOU iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou I LOVE YOU iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou Happy anniversary
