Earnestness is just stupidity sent to college

Here we have some clouds. Not just any clouds of course, but very rare Tasmanian clouds. As any proud Tasmanian will tell you, we very rarely get clouds around these parts. We are quite lucky down here at the arse end of the word (thank you Paul Keating), quirks of history, geography and weather have engendered character traits in Tasmanians that are quite profound in both their homogeny and uniqueness.

In general, Tasmanians are very trustworthy; we rarely (if ever) lie, exaggerate or worship false idols. We wash behind our ears every time, and brush our teeth not twice, but three times a day. We love our mothers dearly, and we respect our fathers deeply. Tasmanian men in particular are excellent lovers, kind to their wives and are exceptional fathers. Tasmanian women are a credit to their gender; they smile at the appropriate moments, frown when required, do not talk back to their husbands and benevolent (yet firm) with their children. Tasmanian children are seen, but rarely heard (although when they are, they demonstrate singing voices rich and sweet in tenor and timbre as a rule), they obey their parent’s instructions rigidly, but are not lacking in the possession of rich imaginations and manage to strike a perfect balance between sensitive artistic temperaments and first-class physical conditioning.

But you know, upon reflection, the things that really stand out in Tasmanians; the things that you can expect to find above everything else, is our fundamental decency, and overarching modesty.

I am floored by the humility and modesty...

in fact if you had just a pint more of humility you'd be perfect. :-)

My goodness...you do talk crap sometimes, dear boy. I think you have the qualities of Victorians mixed up with those of Taswegians...
And if I am not mistaken, the sun shining out of those clouds really does make one think of the sun shining out of an arsehole!!! heh heh

Are you sure you aren't living in Lake Wobegon?

Lake Wobegon, that's it!
But haha, Tasmania rules!
Wow, that's a lot of light in a lot of dark in your picture.

Ah, reminds me of a famous moment in the Benson sitcom from way back:

This experience sure has taught me some humility. And now that I have humility, I have everything!
Wow - and free-flowing honey for everyone! Paradise!

Priyanka, it’s always been my fundamental flaw, TOO MUCH humility!

Plenty of Ezra to come, don’t worry about that.

Sue, typical Victorian negativity. No wonder you guys kept voting for Kennett...

Are you suggesting that this photo is a ‘goatse cloud’?

USelaine, I had to look that one up. Very odd...

Dina, it was one of those mornings!

Per, I miss Benson. Underrated as a show.

Boise Diva, if only we could get rid of these darn ants!

Oh Kris...a knife to the heart! The other deluded souls here may have voted for him...but I NEVER 'Jeffed' the state! I am shattered that you lumped me in with 'that' lot!!!!!
Anyway...as an AUSTRALIAN...I love ALL the states.

I would be writing for the first time here but have been visiting your blog a lot, thanks to Priyanka, who keeps sending me the links every now and then. I must say you have an eye for the beautiful things in life. I would like to thank you for bringing us such lovely pix of Henry and Ezra, they really are the "strappy, young lads", as you say. The quotes are damn good and hard-hitting as well. Please keep posting Henry and Ezra, they are just sooooooo cute.

Sue, Jeff had quite a following with female voters, the stats have always borne that out. Oddly enough so did Mr Howard. What that says about ladies, I’m not sure...

See, I’m Tasmanian, I have quite clear rankings of preference for all the states: e.g. NSW BOO!;!

Yamini, thanks for that. Please keep visiting and I’ll keep posting!

Lost inside an adorable illusion and I cannot hide, I'm the one you're using, please don't push me aside, we could've made it cruising, yeah.

Yes it is Theme Thusday again, and today we are talking GLASS . I've three possible hooks to hang my [glass] hat on with this theme. First, the photo! Yes, it is the river again from an odd angle in an interesting light. You can just make out the bottom, which should tell you that I'm right on the shore. In some ways, the distortion of the stones below the surface reminds me of ye olde glass windows, what they call "cylinder blown sheet glass". You can still find some of this around Hobart these days. Thw second link comes from a trip I took to Venice a few years back. You're probably aware that Venice was (is?) a glass-making centre of excellence. If you have ever been there and taken the tour of the glass factories, you might be familiar with the sheer amount of coloured glass that sits at the bottom of the water there. These fragments of glass have been worn down and had their edges dulled by their time in the water, which makes them ample keepsakes for the ...

Hold me now, oh hold me now, until this hour has gone around. And I'm gone on the rising tide, to face Van Dieman's Land

Theme Thursday again, and this one is rather easy. I am Tasmanian, you see, and aside from being all around general geniuses - as I have amply described previously - we are also very familiar with the concept of WATER. Tasmania is the ONLY island state of an ISLAND continent. That means, we're surrounded by WATER. That should help explain why I take so many photographs of water . Tasmania was for a long time the place where the British (an island race terrified of water) sent their poor people most vile and horrid criminals. The sort of folk who would face the stark choice of a death sentence , or transportation to the other end of the world. Their catalogue of crimes is horrifying : stealing bread assault stealing gentlemen's handkerchiefs drunken assault being poor affray ladies being overly friendly with gentlemen for money hitting people having a drink and a laugh public drunkenness being Irish Fenian terrorist activities being Catholic religious subversion. ...

Happy anniversary baby, got you on my mind

No it is not a webcam, but this photograph was taken a mere forty-five ago on my way in to work. Here you can see a good old fashioned Hobart autumn morning, with the rain pelting down and me getting drenched. This one was taken on the corner of Macquarie and Elizabeth, while I was waiting for the lights to change. Come on Ampelmännchen ! Today is my wedding anniversary, an apparently I need to be showering Jen with leather -related goodies. Va-va-vaVOOM! To you Jennifer, here is a poem I wrote this very morning. Anniversary I love you i love you iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou I LOVE you I love YOU iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou I LOVE YOU iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou Happy anniversary
