Everything is funny as long as it is happening to Somebody Else.

Here is another of what I label my 1970s Yugoslavia photographs. More Tuzla that Sarajevo perhaps, but a wet winter's shot nonetheless. Yes it is 10 Murray again looking tired.

I promised it on Wednesday, so here you can have it now: part one of Ten True Things About Me:
  • As a lad, my favourite colour was RED. At some point, my favourite colour has shifted to BLUE. I believe that this relates to a temperamental shift, rather than any unconscious political motives.

  • When I was in high school - a period I broadly detested, by the way - people would often say "these are the best years of your life". I do not have the words to possibly express how depressing and disheartening that was to me. Gladly, they were quite wrong. [As an aside, how miserable their own adult lives must have been!]

  • The depth of my feelings for both of my sons surprises me on occasion. Ultimately, it is something of a relief, as I honestly wasn't too sure how I'd feel about them before they arrived.

  • I like chickens more than I like dogs. Dogs smell and too easily tolerate abusive relationships. I don't respect many dogs.

  • I have only ever spoken the words "I love you" - in a romantic context - to one person. That seems to surprise people, and their surprise surprises me.

I completely agree with your point on school days supposedly being the best of one's life. Whoever tells children that deserves a turn on the ducking stool.

Lonie, AND the strap!

I am not big on the "I love you thing" either!

Otin, it seems a silly thing to say if you don't mean in.

People seem to say it to fill in the awkward gaps.

these were remarkably beautiful. thank you for sharing.

Chris, now I'm blushing.

This is a beautiful true facts list and I really admire the last one. Not many men (or women can for that matter) can claim that, you know!!
Kris McCracken said…
Yamini, well, I know that Jen can't claim it! ;)

It is nice to know something more about you. Maybe I'll fare better in the Facebook quiz.. if u create another. :-)

I didn't like school until the last year - things would be good now if I still had the energy I had then - and yes I agree with you about the love thing but chickens rather than dogs - there I fervently disagree.

Kris, I hope there are no saucepans flying in ur direction at home by now!! ;-)

And yes, Jen can;t claim that because she has not one, but three gorgeous men in her life. Touchwood!! (See I didnt forget to include you as well) :-))

my school days were such a lonely period in my life too - i liked and i thrived in univeristy, but at school, i simply remained stagnant

Hyde DP, I think that school isn't suited to young people.

Yamini, she just blushed.

Yamini, I'm not counting children as "romantic" I love yous.
Kris McCracken said…
Kiwi, that sounds rather familiar...

That was interesting to know about your points of view. I agree with most of them, specially with the last one!

Who knows where we would end up if we could do it all again. School was never my forte. A period of about 12 years where I marked time until I could eventually leave.
I have no problem telling anyone that I love them if it is warranted.
I also have no compunction in telling someone that I don't like them. Politely, sometimes. Abusive mostly.

Another who agrees about the school/best days thing. Actually the last 2 years weren't so bad I guess, but the rest of it, urgh.

You are so mean. :-P
Enjoying your writing along with the photos. Good stuff!

a wonderful list!

I have to wonder whether chickens don't tolerate abusive relationships now. What about cats?

oh, and the title of this post is very true. It's something I say all the time.
Hi! Kris,
A very interesting photograph......"More Tuzla that Sarajevo perhaps, but a wet winter's shot nonetheless."

Kris said,"part one of Ten True Things About Me:...Wow!...those ten facts are very interesting too!

Maybe a bit too grand for Tuzla ;)

It's amazing how much love a parent has for a child, isn't it? Boundless.

Jackie, Alice Cooper was right!

Kitty, cats will leave unless there is something tangible in it for them I admire them for the selfishness.
Kris McCracken said…
Kitty, very right. It’s a tragedy if it happens to US though!
Kris McCracken said…
DeeDee, I am glad you read through it.

Tash, even (especially) when they are being rotten.

Tash, poor old Tuzla. As a fan of salt, I’m a fan of Tuzla.

I agree with you 100% on points #2 and #3 (tho i have just 1 daughter).

Loving the 70's Yugo theme and the name of it - can really apply to almost any communist state - though I would not restrict it to the 70's.

Here would be my addition to this theme, shot in Sydney:

Gabor, that is an excellent shot you've linked to there. High rise, high concentration public housing really didn't work out too well as a public policy response, did it?

Hold me now, oh hold me now, until this hour has gone around. And I'm gone on the rising tide, to face Van Dieman's Land

Theme Thursday again, and this one is rather easy. I am Tasmanian, you see, and aside from being all around general geniuses - as I have amply described previously - we are also very familiar with the concept of WATER. Tasmania is the ONLY island state of an ISLAND continent. That means, we're surrounded by WATER. That should help explain why I take so many photographs of water . Tasmania was for a long time the place where the British (an island race terrified of water) sent their poor people most vile and horrid criminals. The sort of folk who would face the stark choice of a death sentence , or transportation to the other end of the world. Their catalogue of crimes is horrifying : stealing bread assault stealing gentlemen's handkerchiefs drunken assault being poor affray ladies being overly friendly with gentlemen for money hitting people having a drink and a laugh public drunkenness being Irish Fenian terrorist activities being Catholic religious subversion. ...

Lost inside an adorable illusion and I cannot hide, I'm the one you're using, please don't push me aside, we could've made it cruising, yeah.

Yes it is Theme Thusday again, and today we are talking GLASS . I've three possible hooks to hang my [glass] hat on with this theme. First, the photo! Yes, it is the river again from an odd angle in an interesting light. You can just make out the bottom, which should tell you that I'm right on the shore. In some ways, the distortion of the stones below the surface reminds me of ye olde glass windows, what they call "cylinder blown sheet glass". You can still find some of this around Hobart these days. Thw second link comes from a trip I took to Venice a few years back. You're probably aware that Venice was (is?) a glass-making centre of excellence. If you have ever been there and taken the tour of the glass factories, you might be familiar with the sheer amount of coloured glass that sits at the bottom of the water there. These fragments of glass have been worn down and had their edges dulled by their time in the water, which makes them ample keepsakes for the ...

Happy anniversary baby, got you on my mind

No it is not a webcam, but this photograph was taken a mere forty-five ago on my way in to work. Here you can see a good old fashioned Hobart autumn morning, with the rain pelting down and me getting drenched. This one was taken on the corner of Macquarie and Elizabeth, while I was waiting for the lights to change. Come on Ampelmännchen ! Today is my wedding anniversary, an apparently I need to be showering Jen with leather -related goodies. Va-va-vaVOOM! To you Jennifer, here is a poem I wrote this very morning. Anniversary I love you i love you iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou I LOVE you I love YOU iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou I LOVE YOU iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou Happy anniversary
