Today’s photo should beyond any doubt confirm that Tasmania has indeed switched into Autumn mode. This is Parliament Lawn taken this morning, shrouded in a blanket of leaves; the sun was still quite low and cast some interesting shadows through the trees.
I will not lie to you, I like this time of year and don’t mind the brisk weather. Of course, I can say this that we now live in a house with great insulation and decent heating. I wasn’t really so keen when I lived in share houses. I’m sure most people have experience of an old house where you can see the sunlight outside shining in through the gaps that had opened between walls and the foundations had shifted (and feel the cold wind!).
One of the great ironies of the gentrification certain suburbs here in Hobart is that the now trendy suburbs were once slums, and often the houses there were (understandably) rather shoddily built. My experience of living in Battery Point in my first year of university was that the house was not a particularly comfortable one to live in, despite the fact that I only lived three doors down from the previous Premier of the state!

I loved today's pic. The well maintained lawns have a way of making me feel extremely happy about living on this planet :)
P.S: Give my love to your son. He is adorable.
i think former mosques don't offend anyone in our town - it's now recognised as a christian town with an immigrant muslim population. in any case, the muslims are converting buildings for their own religious use, and there is no opposition from the locals - we're getting more multi-cultural in hania...
Lakes are still frozen, rivers are free and we can see snow only in forests now. Rabbits ate our crocuses last night, daffodils are not yet blooming. .
and you are getting autumn colours, wonderful.
Kris, when you have experiences about worse conditions, you can appreciate greatly the better built houses and this heating systems :))
Have a happy time with your family!
It's always funny to see how you are going towards Autumn ... and we are longing to start Spring and Summer!!
On your part of the world, the leaves are falling while here in ours its growing! Wonderful! enjoy the season!
Maria: thanks for answering my question, glad to hear that Hania is going onward and upward!
Michelle: research tells me Hobart sits at 42°S, and Christchurch at 43°S, I'd imagine we've got heaps in common!
Leenam: you're right about that, having experienced poor houses, it makes me all the more thankful for the lovely place we're in now! I hope the rabbits don't move beyond the crocuses!
Patrizia, iBlowfish, Mary, ritalounge and Jackie: the world is indeed a great place where (if you’re lucky enough), you can follow around whatever season you like! I’m happy to head into cooler weather, I like it warm and cold, a change is a good as a holiday.
mirage2g: People in Hobart are getting better about picking up their dog’s little ‘surprises’. It used to be that you’d step in them all the time, but I honestly can’t remember seeing any of their ‘presents’ laying around in the Salamanca area, and people are walking dogs all of the time.
Steffe: Well, I’ll be honest with you, the one Swede that I’ve met recoiled in horror when she saw how dreadful the insulation on most Hobart houses was. I’d say that you guys are quite a bit advanced on us on that score.
Destitute Rebel: Autumn is a beautiful time of year. Sometimes I’m prone to say it is the most beautiful, but then I remember that there is something to love about all of the seasons.
Thanks to all for your kind comments. I’ve got a follow up to this photo today, including a little detective work!
