(My) Photo of the day

Now anyone that knows me knows that I am not the sort of fellow to poke fun at other people’s endeavours. Thus, I shall just post this picture of an art display that has been set up in Kelly’s Garden, which is located directly beneath my office window.

This creature is my favourite of the collection. Yes, I know that it looks like a fifth grade paper mache project (more glitter! more colour!), but that may well be the effect that they are going for. Unfortunately, the pile of starfish that forms its base has already begun to rot and stink to high heaven. I know that art is a multi-sensory experience, but I am not sold on this one. The blurb below explains the concept.

As I said above, I am a kind and generous man by nature (modest too), so I will refrain from commenting on the other ‘works’. However, I must record a conversation with a colleague. We were having a look at them setting up, and Vernon was unsure as to the artistic merit of the pieces. I was explaining how my assumption was that the installations appeared ecological in theme. He remained unconvinced, and pointed to a pile of rubbish in the corner and said, “Is that art?” I was unsure myself, but pointed to another pile of rubbish that had a little blurb in front of it and said, “No, that pile of rubbish is art, and that pile of rubbish is a pile of rubbish!”

And I was correct, it was eco inspired! [Click to enlarge]

It's not that I have anything against being eco friendly but this just looks like a bunch of rubbish that needs to go out to the trash....not what I consider art....thanks for the nice comments about my dad. I am glad I realized what a great dad he was before he died (at 64). Enjoy your son...they change so quickly!!!!

Ah...
Art is so subjective...
I like it. In fact I love it!

That's the thing about art, value is very much in the court of the viewer! I can be pretty picky with my tastes, thus Monet is a genius and Worhol a crook. But that's just me.

Worhol a crook?
Haha
Pray that my daughter doesn't visit your blog. She loves the stuff he did on Marilyn. I remember saying to her that for Camouflage, he used an old Army jacket and she nearly ha da fit! But then what should I expect? She thinks Damien Hurst and Tracy Amos are both geniuses!

I just see Worhol as doing some screen printing and colouring in photocopies. Now I have screen printed and am okay at colouring in, and I have little artistic talent.

Hirst and Emin, my opinion on those two are that they are the worst thing about art today! But as you say, like footy it's all about opinions!

I can't believe I spelt both surnames wrong... having said that I was in a hurry...

I commonly call "Damian Hirst" "David Hurst" after a soccer player, so it's not just you!

I just cannot help but feel that both Hirst and Emin's reputations are built on bulls**t. While a bit of that is necessary, 'good art' (for me) has to be more than that.

I will also put my head on the block and say that I don't like Van Gogh or Gauguin, but that's more because I think that their pictures are rubbish.
Rosie said…
You don't like Van Gogh or Gauguin? hahaha
Please don't say you dont like Kandinsky or Chagal...
Kris McCracken said…
Neither Van Gogh or Gauguin do anything for me aesthetically. I find their reputations annoying. However, Kandinsky I like. Chagall I am happy to sit on the fence with.

I don't hate all art, just the stuff I think is more arse than class. Off the top of my head, artists that I like include Monet, Turner, Hopper, Pollock, Ernst, Rothko, Rubens, Mayakovsky, Braque, (some of) Marc, Renoir, Hofmann, and I think that Paul Klee is WONDERFUL.

Artists that get my goat (and no doubt stick it in a jar of formaldehyde and then sell it for 3 million dollars) are generally just as varied. They do include the oh so shocking Emin and Hirst, but also range into Worhols or Koons, as well as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Jeffery Smart and pretty much every performance artist that has ever fouled the planet! :)

I mean, really, the Viennese Actionists? They are just wankers. Where is the talent in that? Anyone can go out and piss a bunch of people off. The biggest con job in 'art' history those guys if you ask me.

However, each to their own!

Hold me now, oh hold me now, until this hour has gone around. And I'm gone on the rising tide, to face Van Dieman's Land

Theme Thursday again, and this one is rather easy. I am Tasmanian, you see, and aside from being all around general geniuses - as I have amply described previously - we are also very familiar with the concept of WATER. Tasmania is the ONLY island state of an ISLAND continent. That means, we're surrounded by WATER. That should help explain why I take so many photographs of water . Tasmania was for a long time the place where the British (an island race terrified of water) sent their poor people most vile and horrid criminals. The sort of folk who would face the stark choice of a death sentence , or transportation to the other end of the world. Their catalogue of crimes is horrifying : stealing bread assault stealing gentlemen's handkerchiefs drunken assault being poor affray ladies being overly friendly with gentlemen for money hitting people having a drink and a laugh public drunkenness being Irish Fenian terrorist activities being Catholic religious subversion. ...

But when the strong were too weak to hurt the weak, the weak had to be strong enough to leave.

Can you believe that it is time for Theme Thursday already? Today we are not talking chocolate , toddlers , mess or ignominy . No, today we're dealing with ANIMAL . Now I could have posted a picture of a possum, numbat, wombat, wallaby or any other furry killing machine that roams our fair isle, but I figure that I'd use a far more deadly creature as an example of an animal . Some people - I know them as fools - have chosen to embrace that highfalutin idea that human beans are for some ungodly reason superior to animals. Of course, what these imbeciles seem to forget is that were are simple animals ourselves ! Anyone with a baby, toddler, teenage boy or Queenslander in their household could tell you this. Look at Henry [above]. One chocolate frog in the back of the car on a sunny day and all of a sudden it's Elagabalus meets Bacchus for a quick shandy in the Serengeti and we're down on all fours carrying on like a cat in heat. Fair dinkum, anyone who chooses to ...

Something unpleasant is coming when men are anxious to tell the truth.

This is the moon. Have I mentioned how much I adore the zoom on my camera? It's Theme Thursday you see, and after last week's limp effort, I have been thinking about how I might redeem myself. Then I clicked on the topic and discover that it was BUTTON. We've been hearing a lot about the moon in the past couple of weeks. Apparently some fellas went up there and played golf and what-not forty-odd years ago. The desire to get to the moon, however, was not simply about enhancing opportunities for Meg and Mog titles and skirting local planning by-laws in the construction of new and innovative golf courses. No, all of your Sputniks , "One small steps" and freeze dried ice cream was about one thing , and one thing only : MAD Now, I don't mean mad in terms of "bloke breaks record for number of scorpions he can get up his bum", no I mean MAD as in Mutual assured destruction . When I was a young man you see, there was a lot of talk about the type of m...
