A theory has only the alternative of being right or wrong. A model has a third possibility: it may be right, but irrelevant.

A Theme Thursday topic that a man can really embrace: CLIMATE CHANGE!

All winter down here at the arse end of the world [Trademark former Australian PM P.J. Keating] it's been rain, snow, sleet, grey skies, runny noses, grumpy kids, cranky wives and tired husbands.

So, if you don’t mind sir, I’d quite fancy a spot of CLIMATE CHANGE thankyouverymuch!

I am sure that the fellow holed up on this little yacht in the centre of the Derwent this morning would agree. Indeed, if the sea levels rise, he’ll be set.

And if we’re jabbering on about CLIMATE CHANGE, let me get a quick word in about my two very favourite periods of it: the Medieval Warm Period (AD 800–1300) that saw the Vikings get out and about raping, pillaging and composing heavy metal rock songs. Of course, how can you talk about that without mentioning the Little Ice Age (on and off from AD 1500ish–1850ish)? Personally, I blame the Little Ice Age for the poor state of cricket in the Enlightenment period (amongst other things).

lol. always a trip...has cricket recovered?

Brian, we've seen some highs and lows, but it is reasonable shape.

How funny you should mention the little ice age...there is a theory that it came about because of the die off of humans in the black plague.
Kris McCracken said…
Colette, or indeed the reverse!

the earth is fighting back. i think perhaps no one has explained cricket sufficiently to the earth...there's a job for you.
Great musing, having a think... -J

LOL~ hope you get some sunny days soon!

I will add my best wishes to Betsy's. We have had a glorious summer here in the Pacific Northwest -- but I fear those days are nearly over. Grey skies abound - with the sun bravely trying to poke through even so. Soon, winter.

that mini ice age did allow us to have the classical Dickens like victorian snowy christmases thogh. A thing of the past now.

I think I'd prefer the Medieval Warm Period, too! :)

I know you're being funny but it's true, the planet has been warming and cooling for millennia . . .I get angry when I see skewed statistics from 1850 onwards with little regard for carbon found in ice cores millions of years old. Not that we shouldn't do something about our wasteful and overconsuming lives but all this focus on C02 is just a nice political distraction to my mind. Ok you may pillory me now!
Kris McCracken said…
Baino, my tongue may be in my cheek, but the point should be clear. The world warms, the world cools. Many, many people in this "debate" seem to miss that rather obvious fact.

I'm not a sceptic of the notion of the world warming up; but forgive me for being sceptical of the multitude of agendas from people of ALL sides.

There are a lot of con jobs happening right now.

Tom, cricket is like life, only everyone is dressed in white.

Harnett, thinking can be dangerous.
Kris McCracken said…
Betsy, it's my day off today, and it's raining!
Kris McCracken said…
AngelMay, I'm hoping that all of this rain now won't mean more scrub that will burn in bushfires this coming summer.
Kris McCracken said…
mmm, no good if you were in the poorhouse!
Kris McCracken said…
Wings, especially if you were a Viking!
Kris McCracken said…
Poetikat, tomorrow, hopefully!

Glad we don't live in the age of the Vikings...I too hope you get some rain.

sunny days have been a bit scarce lately. We even had snow today in Massachusetts. A lull in the eye of the storm, perhaps?
Kris McCracken said…
E, we've had TOO MUCH rain!

Dreamhaven, most of what I know of Massachusetts I learned from the Bee Gees.

Hold me now, oh hold me now, until this hour has gone around. And I'm gone on the rising tide, to face Van Dieman's Land

Theme Thursday again, and this one is rather easy. I am Tasmanian, you see, and aside from being all around general geniuses - as I have amply described previously - we are also very familiar with the concept of WATER. Tasmania is the ONLY island state of an ISLAND continent. That means, we're surrounded by WATER. That should help explain why I take so many photographs of water . Tasmania was for a long time the place where the British (an island race terrified of water) sent their poor people most vile and horrid criminals. The sort of folk who would face the stark choice of a death sentence , or transportation to the other end of the world. Their catalogue of crimes is horrifying : stealing bread assault stealing gentlemen's handkerchiefs drunken assault being poor affray ladies being overly friendly with gentlemen for money hitting people having a drink and a laugh public drunkenness being Irish Fenian terrorist activities being Catholic religious subversion. ...

But when the strong were too weak to hurt the weak, the weak had to be strong enough to leave.

Can you believe that it is time for Theme Thursday already? Today we are not talking chocolate , toddlers , mess or ignominy . No, today we're dealing with ANIMAL . Now I could have posted a picture of a possum, numbat, wombat, wallaby or any other furry killing machine that roams our fair isle, but I figure that I'd use a far more deadly creature as an example of an animal . Some people - I know them as fools - have chosen to embrace that highfalutin idea that human beans are for some ungodly reason superior to animals. Of course, what these imbeciles seem to forget is that were are simple animals ourselves ! Anyone with a baby, toddler, teenage boy or Queenslander in their household could tell you this. Look at Henry [above]. One chocolate frog in the back of the car on a sunny day and all of a sudden it's Elagabalus meets Bacchus for a quick shandy in the Serengeti and we're down on all fours carrying on like a cat in heat. Fair dinkum, anyone who chooses to ...

Something unpleasant is coming when men are anxious to tell the truth.

This is the moon. Have I mentioned how much I adore the zoom on my camera? It's Theme Thursday you see, and after last week's limp effort, I have been thinking about how I might redeem myself. Then I clicked on the topic and discover that it was BUTTON. We've been hearing a lot about the moon in the past couple of weeks. Apparently some fellas went up there and played golf and what-not forty-odd years ago. The desire to get to the moon, however, was not simply about enhancing opportunities for Meg and Mog titles and skirting local planning by-laws in the construction of new and innovative golf courses. No, all of your Sputniks , "One small steps" and freeze dried ice cream was about one thing , and one thing only : MAD Now, I don't mean mad in terms of "bloke breaks record for number of scorpions he can get up his bum", no I mean MAD as in Mutual assured destruction . When I was a young man you see, there was a lot of talk about the type of m...
