Ignorance is the parent of fear.

Ezra did his bit for the world today, with two vaccinations - chickenpox and swine flu - to give YOU [and me and Henry and Jen and your kids and their kids and their kids etc etc] safety from a number of preventable, but potentially deadly, diseases.

Jen and I joined him in the fight against tetanus and whooping cough (plus swine flu); and Henry (a long supported of vaccination) went with the swine flu on his own.

If the little grinning bloke above can do it, you can too!

[I have spoken about this before, of course...]

My boy had some vaccinations this week too! He had a booster tetanus and a typhoid one. And he is taking his malaria tablets!
As you might guess, he is heading o'seas again to a third world country!
I am going to try to get our school to cover us with the swine flu vax this year as well as the usual flu one!
I believe in immunization too. My kids had every vaccination going!

Sue, is Indonesia third world? I reckon that it is second.

Geeze I feel left out. I haven't had any needles for about ten years. Unless you count giving blood.
What third world? There is Tasmania, then Australia and after that where else?

I hope he did not cry too much. I love that smile!

A big hug to the kiddo!

Hear, hear - regarding shots!
Now as far as that boy is concerned - can anyone be more beautiful??
Great photo - is it straight from the camera? What is your new camera again? Any pointers on people shots for those-who-are-lousy-at-getting-good-people-photos esp. with kids on the move! Special settings? Much appreciated.

As one of the people responsible for actually jagging everybody, can I just say "hooray", I wish more people were this responsible.

It still breaks my heart though when a baby comes in all smiles, and after I've done the deed they look at me with the most accusatory "how could you *do* that to me?" look. It gets me every time.

Wow, that smile made me smile as well... but sadly I can not afford a vaccine. American Healthcare does not like people like me...

I cannot believe how adorable this little boy is!! After seeing him, I couldn't even think about shots.
KL said…
No way. I am extremely scared of shots. Did he cry?
Tash said…
I do remember the 1st shot Ian got...he was lying there, curiously looking around, and then there was this slow realization of pain, and the face turned red, and then there was the silent scream followed by not so silent screaming...tearing our heart to bits. And then, in 15 minutes, all was forgotten. Completely. He remembers no shots now.

Roddy, you should get out more.
Kris McCracken said…
Priyanka, a few tears, but it only lasted until I gave him a lolly snake.
Kris McCracken said…
Tash, I think that I bumped up the exposure slightly, but that was about it.

The biggest tip with kids is to have the camera at hand, set it to as high a shutter speed as the light will allow and take lots and lots of photos. With toddlers I get one decent shot from twenty (or so). The reason that I have a lot of photos at the beach is not unrelated to the amount of natural light it affords.

Jackie, my mantra is better the minute amount of pain than the thing that you are trying to avoid catching!
Kris McCracken said…
UH, we're lucky down here. The swine flu vaccine was free, and we paid for the tetanus and whooping cough, although it was subsidised so was not too much.

All the kids' vaccines are free (in fact, not only does it not cost, you get a tax rebate if you have them fully vaccinated by the Federal Government).
Kris McCracken said…
Magpie, it will keep him happy and healthy!
Kris McCracken said…
KL, the needle is no worse than hot sand underfoot. I'd prefer that to measles.
Kris McCracken said…
Tash, they do seem offended when the needle goes in, but our two forget it very quickly once a lolly or sticker appears.

Second? I was more of the opinion that second world countries referred to their political persuasion... as in communist/socialist states!?? And third world countries were classified by various indices: their political rights and civil liberties, the gross national income and poverty of countries, the human development of countries, and the freedom of information within a country.
And yes, Roddy...there are other countries besides Australia and as a seaman you should be well aware of that!! (Just as there are other groups in the world besides The Beatles!!!)

Sue, *some* theorists of international relations have attempted to re-assign the designations associated with Mao's 'four worlds theory' in a simplified manner (eliminating non-aligned) and broadly interpreting 'first' as wealthy; 'second' as functional, but either developing, regressing or stagnating; and 'third' as failed or poverty-stricken.

I am not a fan of the usurpation, and must refrain from doing so in the future.

That said, I would interpret Indonesia under Mao's understanding as 'non-aligned' (although Suharto would have thought differently) during the Cold War, and they very much at the successful end of the developing spectrum today (much to many people's surprise!)

Hey Kris, obviously we hit some kind of nerve with Sue.
Sue, go back and reread my statement, tongue in cheek.
Tasmania first. Australia second. Anywhere else, questionable.
As a seaman I am well aware of the rest of the planet. As an Australian, who really cares.
As for the Beatles? The beginning and the end of music as far as I am concerned. Again, tongue in cheek.
Please don't take things so literally. At least not in this blog.

Note to self...never disagree with one so well versed in political science!!! Touche, Kris!
Note to Roddy...perhaps the nerve touched was yours...I was just takin' the p*** out of ya, dear bro'!!!
I hardly ever take anything seriously...least of all this blog! I thoroughly enjoy it's humour and I guess sometimes it is hard to convey irony in the written word!
Kris McCracken said…
Roddy, you're a dill!
Kris McCracken said…
Sue, you were technically correct about Mao's Four Worlds. The people (like I), who misuse it, are in the wrong.
So true! I had the vaccinations my self last November and will do the recall again next week.
A wonderful photo of your son!!

Kris and Sue, I stand humbled.

Diedrick, well done!

Roddy, and so you should.

Ah, Joe, you never knew the whole of it...

I still have the robot on the job. Here you can see the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery . And here is a poem: Soliloquy for One Dead Bruce Dawe Ah, no, Joe, you never knew the whole of it, the whistling which is only the wind in the chimney's smoking belly, the footsteps on the muddy path that are always somebody else's. I think of your limbs down there, softly becoming mineral, the life of grasses, and the old love of you thrusts the tears up into my eyes, with the family aware and looking everywhere else. Sometimes when summer is over the land, when the heat quickens the deaf timbers, and birds are thick in the plumbs again, my heart sickens, Joe, calling for the water of your voice and the gone agony of your nearness. I try hard to forget, saying: If God wills, it must be so, because of His goodness, because- but the grasshopper memory leaps in the long thicket, knowing no ease. Ah, Joe, you never knew the whole of it... I like Bruce Dawe. He just my be my favourite Austral...

There was nothing left. No reason, no conscience, no understanding; even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, good or evil, right or wrong.

Here is a self portrait. I’m calling it Portrait of a lady in a dirty window . Shocking, isn’t it? However, it is apt! Samhain , Nos Galan Gaeaf , Hop-tu-Naa , All Saints , All Hallows , Hallowmas , Hallowe'en or HALLOWEEN . It’s Theme Thursday and we’re talking about the festivals traditionally held at the end of the harvest season. Huh? No wonder Australians have trouble with the concept of HALLOWEEN. For the record, in my thirty-two L O N G years on the planet, I can’t say I’ve ever seen ghosts ‘n goblins, trick ‘n treaters or Michael Myers stalking Tasmania’s streets at the end of October. [That said, I did once see a woman as pale as a ghost turning tricks that looked like Michael Myers in late November one time.] Despite the best efforts of Hollywood, sitcoms, and innumerable companies; it seems Australians are impervious to the [ahem] charms of a corporatized variant of a celebration of the end of the "lighter half" of the year and beginning of the "darke...

In dreams begin responsibilities.

A life at sea, that's for me, only I just don't have the BREAD. That's right, Theme Thursday yet again and I post a photo of a yacht dicking about in Bass Strait just off Wynyard. The problem is, I am yet again stuck at work, slogging away, because I knead need the dough . My understanding is that it is the dough that makes the BREAD. And it is the BREAD that buys the yacht. On my salary though, I will be lucky to have enough dough or BREAD for a half dozen dinner rolls. Happy Theme Thursday people, sorry for the rush.
