People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Resting for Autumn. Sullivans Cove, May 2010.

Once again, an anti-Antipodean decree has confirmed those of us down here at the arse-end of the world second nay, eighth-class citizens!

To “celebrate” the one-hundredth posting of the Theme Thursday meme, the Theme Thursday junta have offered the diktat that the topic for the Theme will only appear on Thursday, at 6:00 a.m. Eastern United States Time.

For those in the know, 6 am eating bagels in New York means 8 pm in Hobart bathing children! Given that I have established an 8:30 am/8 pm dynamic of general shot/Henry and Ezra shot, the new format does not really work for me.

Hence, today I share with you my decision to declare throw off the yoke of Yankee imperialism and declare my independence!

Yes people, today I choose my own destiny through selecting my own Theme Thursday topic. Today I have a doozy: POTAMOPHILOUS.

Yes, I very much fit the profile of a POTAMOPHILOUS-type, as all of you will no doubt already know by the sheer amount of photographs that would appeal to the POTAMOPHILOUS among you.

My hope is that other disgruntled members of the Theme Thursday community who also share POTAMOPHILOUS tendencies will similarly liberate themselves from the state of intellectual bondage that they remain trapped in and join me in my celebration of the brave new Theme Thursday by dropping them word POTAMOPHILOUS in blog postings, comments pages, letters to the editor, death notices and so on.

I thank you in advance...

Kris, you missed the point of the change. They only announce the theme on Thursday at 6 Eastern Time; you actually have a whole week to come up with a relevant post.

I got that, only then it is not Theme Thursday any more. It's Theme Something Else Entirely. It complicates my schedule rather than eases it.

That’s cool though, and don’t forget I mainly post with my tongue firmly in my cheek! :)

My particular potamophilus relationship is with the Parramatta River!

I have thrown off the yoke also ... and am not reassured by the protestation that we are being given more time. Attention spans are not that elastic.

Julie, the life of a revolutionary is a hard one!

Do you reckon Gollum may have been potamophilous?

Oh, I'm sorry...I don't like the change either. Now...how DO you pronounce that word??? haha
Betsy Brock said…
I'd like to know WHY we had to have the change. Was it really necessary? Wish we could have voted. Enjoy bath time with the kiddos...

ha, you're a rebel.

Roddy, huh?

Betsy, change is always hard!

Tom, only this time, I have a cause!

Roddy, it took you that long?

I dunno. I like it much better than the "Theme Sunday" setup from before.
Kris McCracken said…
We should call it "Theme Friday".

POTAMOPHILOUS ?

So this is where we come to discuss the philosphy of potatoes that appear in the shape of hippopotamuses? (hippopotomi?)

Nice.

If you want to be loved, be lovable.

Henry admires the view.

Zeal, n. A certain nervous disorder afflicting the young and inexperienced. A passion that goeth before a sprawl.

Here I have tried my hand at the homemade sepia-toned photo. I wasn’t happy with the way that the sun had washed out some of the colours in the original, so had a bit of a fiddle because I like the look on Henry’s face, and didn’t want to pass on posting it. I have a tip for those of you burdened with the great, unceasing weight of parenthood. I have a new recipe, in the vein of the quick microwaved chocolate cake . Get this, microwaved potato chips . I gave them a run on Sunday, Henry liked the so much I did it again last night. Tonight, I shall be experimenting with sweet potato. I think that the ground is open for me to exploit opportunities in the swede, turnip, carrot and maybe even explore in the area of pumpkins. Radical, I know. I’m a boundary-pusher by nature. It's pretty simple, take the potato. Slice it thinly (it doesn't have to be too thin, but thin enough). Lay the slices on the microwave plate, whack a bit of salt over the top and nuke the buggers for five minut

Ah, Joe, you never knew the whole of it...

I still have the robot on the job. Here you can see the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery . And here is a poem: Soliloquy for One Dead Bruce Dawe Ah, no, Joe, you never knew the whole of it, the whistling which is only the wind in the chimney's smoking belly, the footsteps on the muddy path that are always somebody else's. I think of your limbs down there, softly becoming mineral, the life of grasses, and the old love of you thrusts the tears up into my eyes, with the family aware and looking everywhere else. Sometimes when summer is over the land, when the heat quickens the deaf timbers, and birds are thick in the plumbs again, my heart sickens, Joe, calling for the water of your voice and the gone agony of your nearness. I try hard to forget, saying: If God wills, it must be so, because of His goodness, because- but the grasshopper memory leaps in the long thicket, knowing no ease. Ah, Joe, you never knew the whole of it... I like Bruce Dawe. He just my be my favourite Austral
