I have three kinds of friends: those who love me, those who pay no attention to me, and those who detest me.

Look both ways. The intersection of Davey and Murray Streets, July 2012.

More Q and A. More stolen from Sunday Stealing. This week, Our Players' Meme...

1. You have been awarded the time off from work and an all-expenses paid week anywhere in the United States. The catch is that it must be somewhere you have not been before. Where do you choose to visit?

Given that I have not been to the US at all, I have a whole continent to choose from. Seattle and the Pacific Northwest.

2. Name three of your guilty pleasures.

I generally don’t feel guilt about pleasure. However, the recent healthy-living kick has seen me attach some to the wrong types of food. I also struggle with spending money on myself.

3. The best kind of Girl Scout Cookie is:

Ummm, the normal ones? I like a nice plain biscuit.

4. What do you value most in other people?

Honesty, integrity and half a brain.

5. Be honest. Do you sneak some raw cookie dough when you’re baking cookies?

Not unless the recipe requires me too.

6. Have you ever looked back at your life and realised that something you thought was a bad thing was actually a blessing in disguise?!
Life is full of twists and turns. I’m sure that there have been many things that I’ve been better off without. Endings and beginnings, especially!

7. What is the most beautiful place you’ve ever visited?
It depends on your mood and experience that you’re after. There are lots of extraordinarily beautiful places in Tasmania, from the rugged, windswept shores of the west coast; the interesting geological mix of the north west coast; the calmer pristine beaches of the east coast or the temperate rain forests all over the State. If it’s human constructions you’re after, Notre Dame in Paris takes some beating.

8. Are you more of a thinker or a feeler?
I’m a thinker, who now and again is capable of feeling.

9. Name three things you are thankful for right now.
I remain thankful for happy and healthy children; a handsome wife and some miles left on the clock!

10. Have you ever participated in a three-legged race?
Indeed I have. This is a mandatory requirement of childhood.

11. When you are at an event that plays the National Anthem, do you place your hand over your heart?
I don’t even bother standing. Silly things, patriotic symbols. They’re liable to get a man killed...

12. What kind of work do you do?
Increasingly frustrating work.

13. During the course of your lifetime, which job or career has been your favourite or most fulfilling?
I enjoyed the teaching and lecturing component of my time at university. I especially enjoy getting people to challenge themselves intellectually and reflect upon their own assumptions, opinions and beliefs

14. Do you think it’s necessary in your life to have a day-to-day “career” that is meaningful and service-oriented or do you function better in “just a job” with a steady paycheck?
A career would be nice, but the cards have fallen in such a way that ‘just a job’ seems to be what I have been left with. It doesn’t mean that you can’t do good or (occasionally) interesting things, but it is just a job.

15. Was there ever a time in your life when you wanted to stay home with your children instead of working, even if it meant less money in the household?
Every day of my working life. That said, I’ve taken/ structured work in such a way to maximise my time at home (seemingly cutting my own throat career-wise). C'est la vie, plus ça change et autres banalités qui semblent plus resonent en français.

16. Tell us your worst boss story.
Oh, I have a few. Not on a public forum using my real name and image though...

17. Have you ever been the boss?
I have had that pleasure. I’ll be frank, it was less stressful than being a simple employee!

18. What is your dream occupation?
Something stimulating, engaging and ends while there is still light outside.

Ah, Joe, you never knew the whole of it...

I still have the robot on the job. Here you can see the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery . And here is a poem: Soliloquy for One Dead Bruce Dawe Ah, no, Joe, you never knew the whole of it, the whistling which is only the wind in the chimney's smoking belly, the footsteps on the muddy path that are always somebody else's. I think of your limbs down there, softly becoming mineral, the life of grasses, and the old love of you thrusts the tears up into my eyes, with the family aware and looking everywhere else. Sometimes when summer is over the land, when the heat quickens the deaf timbers, and birds are thick in the plumbs again, my heart sickens, Joe, calling for the water of your voice and the gone agony of your nearness. I try hard to forget, saying: If God wills, it must be so, because of His goodness, because- but the grasshopper memory leaps in the long thicket, knowing no ease. Ah, Joe, you never knew the whole of it... I like Bruce Dawe. He just my be my favourite Austral...

There was nothing left. No reason, no conscience, no understanding; even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, good or evil, right or wrong.

Here is a self portrait. I’m calling it Portrait of a lady in a dirty window . Shocking, isn’t it? However, it is apt! Samhain , Nos Galan Gaeaf , Hop-tu-Naa , All Saints , All Hallows , Hallowmas , Hallowe'en or HALLOWEEN . It’s Theme Thursday and we’re talking about the festivals traditionally held at the end of the harvest season. Huh? No wonder Australians have trouble with the concept of HALLOWEEN. For the record, in my thirty-two L O N G years on the planet, I can’t say I’ve ever seen ghosts ‘n goblins, trick ‘n treaters or Michael Myers stalking Tasmania’s streets at the end of October. [That said, I did once see a woman as pale as a ghost turning tricks that looked like Michael Myers in late November one time.] Despite the best efforts of Hollywood, sitcoms, and innumerable companies; it seems Australians are impervious to the [ahem] charms of a corporatized variant of a celebration of the end of the "lighter half" of the year and beginning of the "darke...

In dreams begin responsibilities.

A life at sea, that's for me, only I just don't have the BREAD. That's right, Theme Thursday yet again and I post a photo of a yacht dicking about in Bass Strait just off Wynyard. The problem is, I am yet again stuck at work, slogging away, because I knead need the dough . My understanding is that it is the dough that makes the BREAD. And it is the BREAD that buys the yacht. On my salary though, I will be lucky to have enough dough or BREAD for a half dozen dinner rolls. Happy Theme Thursday people, sorry for the rush.
